I had my frame reconfigured at the last moment. I have 76 inches of wheelbase now and a good long run for the chain drive. Have any of you guys run chain tensioners? Is there any salt issues i should consider before i fab one up. Thanks Greg

Salt issues? At Bonneville? Why would you ever think of asking a question like that?
No hassles at all...if you use a plastic chain. If not -- when your runs are over, remove the chain, soak it in hot water for a few hours to remove the salt, then soak it in kerosene to remove the old lube, then soak it in a good chain lube starting hot but allowing the lube to cool while the chain is still submerged.
Then throw the chain away anyway and install a brand-new one.
Oh, you asked about tensioners, not just the chain per se. Oh -- please ignore the above suggestions. Sorry.

I have seen a bunch of very stretched bikes at Bonneville with no tensioners, how much did you stretch the arm?

SERIOUSLY A long span of chain and a long pull on a run will heat and cause chain to stretch beyond any other experience. Everybody knows about the new chain stretch, which is really just pumping the assembly lube to one side, but the Salt is a different animal. Unless the frame side flexes, even a slack chain will find it's way to the next sprocket. A roller that is common for chain control on a dirt bike will not stand the trip. A stock, spring loaded nylon shoe from a HD primary will spread the contact area out and live on the bottom run, even without the constant oiling that is provided by the HD. Remember, you might be coming down on compression for more than mile, and that will put the slack in the top run, but at least you are not transmitting as much power. The spring load should be installed so that when the bottom run goes tight when slowing it does not bottom out the travel of the spring .

We run one on our bike disguised as a lakester. I suspect our 20 inch wheels spin faster than any of the bikes except for maybe 3. We built a little spring loaded swingarm under the chain. We tried little sprockets and a variety of other stuff, and found that the best material was a hard urethane roller or Nylon roller. Come by an take a look during speedweek.

I wanna buy somthin that will jerk along with a HD primary for the life of the motor. Granted that is usually not much longer than a race motor.

I have had good luck with elastomeric tensioners: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/1L835You have to choose a idler sprocket.....a number 50=530 chain like: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/5A552These will allow the chain to stretch and continue to provide constant tension, you can adjust the amount of tension and bearing makes less drag compared to a friction tensioner. Will be using these or something close on my 2 busa motor streamliner in 2010.

I didn't think I would need one, but since it has been brought up. I am running a stock swing arm length Sportster that should put out about 120 HP. Does anyone here think I might need one? Thanks all, Larry

Larry:
I have a turbo hayabusa for my weekend bike making around 275 hp at the wheel with the stock swing.
I dont have one...... I would think that it would be a safe bet to say you would be ok.
Come to think of it I have not seen any on the very few stretched bikes I have seen......

those grainger parts sure look pretty.... just wait and see what they look like after a 200mph pass because after a 300mph pass there wont be enough pieces left to identify......
