I was wondering if any of you folks have had experience with the Electromotive XDI systems.  We have a turbocharged straight six running a Ron's fuel injection on straight alcohol.   There is a miss that comes on as boost increases.  My thought was a Jabsco water pump we installed might be causing a scattered spark.   This is very frustrating as we have gone over almost everything but the miss remains!

My only thought is that as pressures increase the dielectric strength increases and you will need more voltage to maintain an spark....

What spark plug gap are you running? Close it down and see what happens.

We're running two new batteries, they are charged between runs. The spark plug gap is set at .022 but we have tried up to .035 with no difference.  The ignition system was send back and checked out OK as well as the injection system.

twisted pairs.... Reduce ignition interference...  Miss on boost one would think a lean condition...

How long are your ignition wire runs from the coil packs?

Are your wires well separated from grounds?
You could be jumping spark to ground under high load, as it becomes easier for the spark to jump to ground some place it should not, than jump the high pressure spark plug gap.

What kind of separation do you have on your ignition wires?
You might be getting cross fire under load also.

How old are the spark plug wires etc.

If you have solid core wires, get ride of them. They screw up everything from
the computer to the transdusers. Spell check that! Good luck.

Hi Reb
With my HPX Electromotive says it need 14 to 18 volts . Is yours like that ? Do you run an alternator and does the voltage stay above 14 running 2 batteries like you do ?

1 silly basic question... are ya running a boost compensating fuel pressure regulator?

We re-mounted the coil pack directly to the block a couple of months ago, no paint AND ran ground strap. Brand new Magnacore wires, generously separated all runs are apx. 12-14 inches.  Electromotive assured us 12 volts would be fine for the XDI unit but we replaced one battery just to be sure.   We've discussed a boost compensator for the FI and will no doubt install one but it ran strong until last summer, we did something.   I picked up a shielded water pump and will try that this week but it's drawing at straws.  We've changed jets so often they jump on command, ranging from what worked, to ridiculously rich, alcohol isn't that particular most of the time.   It's a hell of a way to hone ones problem solving skills.

i had a problem once with my wire separators. I used short black rubber fuel hose and zip ties as separators and it generated shorts... it seems that black rubber had a lot of carbon in it and it generated shorts between wires. switched to clear hose and no problems. chased that baby around for a while.. got any black rubber hose ya are using for insulators?

Boy, do I wish it was that simple,   and I know it's sometimes the very simplest of answers that you can overlook,  but no, no black rubber hoses, just Moroso separators.

How many ohms per ft are the plug wires????What is the gap on the mag pick-up is there an altenator on this thing?? Does the tach bounce around with the miss??

We bought these wires specifically for their ohms/ft to match the Electromotive XDI but I can't remember exactly what they are off the top.  The pick up is new and set at .060 with .003 runout on the wheel. No alternator but the batteries are new and charged between runs.   That's a good question on the tach bounce.  I've not seen it and neither driver has ever mentioned one but I will alert the crew to watch out for it.
