The padding behind the helmet......is there a SFI pad or recommendations for materials to use?

The rule book does not specify the type or material. It is assumed one would follow the roll bar padding rule.  Many continue the roll bar padding down the back bars of the cage. As long as there is a substantial pad in the cage I am OK with it.

Jack will tell us what assume means.

Better yet, I can tell you what SFI means.

BSCI Makes SFI 45.1 rated sheet foam.  They have it in 16"x36" sheets in multiple thicknesses. 1/4" to 5" thick.

I have a flat surface behind the seat (a secondary firewall that extends from where the back window was to the floor behind the seat....car is a mid engine) and the roll bars are not directly behind the head as they do in lakester, streamliner or exposed head cars. Having this plate behind the seat makes the typical roll bar mounded SFI padding behind the head impossible.

I was going to make a pad out of about 4-5 pieces of SFI roll bar padding (cut to about 5") mounted side to side on a plywood backer and then covered it with Holstein leather (being safe does not mean you have to give up style).

I would rather use an SFI rated block as mentioned by wolcottjl from BSCI but I cant find any info about the sheet on their site.

Thanks all.....

Did a quick google - Got this site

I would make sure the sheet has the SFI Label.

Call BSCI  Matt Ray and talk to him. Phone number on their site.  I purchased a 5" thick block several years ago and he provided SFI sticker of 45.2
It is essentially the same as the roll bar pad they produce. (the hard stuff)
I used that material for rear and side padding for my head and first lined the cage area with 6061 Aluminum.  Some deformation "can" occur, but just enough to take energy out of the impact.
I still carry though a couple of extra sticks of BSCI roll bar pad, just in case an inspector requires more protection.  :=d

I did some testing to see how my idea of mounting sfi bar padding to a board and covering it would work and am pleased with the results.

The little hide cost about 35$.
Here are the materials used and after hot-gluing the pads to the plywood I rounded the corners with the power sander.

After cutting out a piece of leather I pulled the sides around and used pan head screws to fasten the hide to the wood.

The second half of the pic is the pad mounted and in the car.

I must admit it feels really nice with the helmet on and I know that sweet Holstein cow leather will impress all the ladies!
(all joking aside it should provide a better level of protection than what I have seen on the market.)
