El Mirage GPS
« on: June 11, 2007, 08:38:30 PM »
Went out on a rookie run at El Mirage Sunday. I used a Garmin Etrex Legend that Jim Knapp recommended.

I down loaded GPS Utility from:
http://www.gpsu.co.uk/

It allows you to down load the data from the GPS (if you buy the Garmin serial cable)
From GPS utility you can save the data as a KML file for Google earth. That's the picture below of two runs and the return.

The tracking function can be set to log every second so that you can see the acceleration profile for the run.
Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.
Just remember . . . It isn't life or death.
It's bigger than life or death! It's RACING.

Yeah, that Jim Knapp guy sure knows what he's talking about.  Told me, in fact, that with your Etrex you can  do a File, "Save As" a .txt file, load it into Excel and create a graph of speed over distance so you can see just how much that missed shift actually cost you.

And he writes so much more intelleigibally than that Jack D guy.

I like it, Dean.  Interesting how the recorded speed varied.

The difference is that Jack has been doing those speed-time-distance graphs with various magazines and OEMs for years.
You must know about the FCC laws with regards to performance claims, don't you?
He assembles the latest equipment for them to use in testing at cost.
It is not revolutionary.

I'd trust Jim with most anything but a new unopened 5 gallon can of  ERC racing gas (wouldn't pass spec). Let Jim open it....JD.

It is beginning to sound like the specs are hurting the view.
There are more ways to cheat if that was the objective than there are ways to reasonably check.

Jack is wrong, it is revolutionary.
Sure the GPS goes back to the first satellite launched in 1978, or even back to Transit, the first satellite navigation system in 1960.
The rich, elite, technologically savvy have had the technology available for some time.

But when you cross over the price-performance curve and anybody can buy a GPS for under a $100 that takes no real skill to use and has the features I listed above, THAT'S a revolution.

alright -  I'm doing this from now on.  A few questions.  Anyone know if it has to be an Etrex?  what about a similar Magellan unit?

Do you download into Excel?  How do I get in touch with Jim Knapp after I F it up and get completely flambuzulated?
