Car Wheels
« on: June 07, 2007, 09:14:06 PM »
Is it legal to post car questions here?  Seems like all I see are bike questions!

Anyhow - I just welded up my salvage yard 15" steel wheels for the Camaro, and I'm wondering if it's OK to grind the welds.  They're kind of humpy, as I used my wire feed.  I know NHRA won't let you grind roll cage welds under any circumstances, and didn't know if that rule applies to the rim welding, as well.  I'd kind of like to get rid of some of the added mass so they'll balance up better.  But maybe I goobered the welds equally on all sides of the wheels, so it won't matter, except I'll need a forklift to mount 'em on the car.

Thanks
Dan

We race em all on the site.  Some of us race both.
You could do what I did, try to learn to weld better...   OK just kidding cause I can.
I would say you should be able to grind them and be sure to look at them to see if they need to be welded again after grinding.  :|

Thanks for the input.  I did grind them, and, to my surprise, they looked pretty good.  With the wire feed, some were kinda lumpy, but all were clean and seemed to penetrate well.
