MOTELS AROUND EM
« on: April 22, 2007, 12:38:45 PM »
If anyone has any info on motels, hotels that accepts pets around El-mirage besides down by I-15 (decent ones) I would appreciate any info. I  have heard there is a new one not to  far away.  I'm coming down for the May meet and my son wants to meet us there, (his wife won't stay in the motor home)

Thanks

Hope you don't mind if I tack something on here.  I hope to be there for the June 10th meet with my truck and teardrop.

When will racers/track workers show up??  Friday, Sat.???

I assume since it is BLM you can camp overnight there??  Is that correct??

Would someone like to layout the typical course of events for an El Mirage meet??

Thanks,

Sum

Here are some rules that everyone should know who visit El Mirage Recreational Area. You can also go to the SCTA website, click on El Mirage, then click on El Mirage Racing Procedures and read them. This pretty much tells you what you need to know. For Motel rooms Victorville has many to choose from and that is about 30 minutes away.

Tom G.

The SCTA generally conducts six land speed events annually at El Mirage dry lake in the Mojave Desert. The area is public land. The SCTA operates under permit from the jurisdictional Barstow office of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
Both participants and spectators of the event are required to abide by the following rules while on the lakebed:
 There are speed limits:
5 MPH in the pit area, 25 MPH on the access roads and no more that 15 MPH on the return road or within 50 ft of any camp.
It is illegal to bring in, dispose of, or possess any firewood containing nails, screws, or other metal hardware in the area.
It is illegal to bring in, dispose of, or possess any glass container within the area.
All campfires must be secured in a container or burn barrel anywhere in the area. No campfires on the ground.
No dumping of campfire or BBQ ash on the lakebed.
Open alcoholic beverage containers are not allowed while driving a motor vehicle.
All campsites must be left clean and trash must be packed out.
 NO FIREWORKS!
These rules will be enforced by both the BLM and SCTA.
All association members are asked to assist in assuring compliance.

The El Mirage racing procedures are still the 2006 copy on the SCTA web site, but read them any way.

When you enter the lake bed you will drive a couple of miles before you see anything. Stay to the right side. Sooner or later you will see the cones at the end of the race course. Tech inspection is at the right corner of the course. Pits are about 50% behind the start line and the rest between the start line and the finish line.

The alkali lake bed is naturally flat and really hard. Take a hammer to it and it doesn't leave much of a dent. Spinning tires take their toll and the course may have to be moved sometime during the day.

Temperatures run from the 100's to the 20's and both can happen on the same day. If you are lucky, really lucky, the wind won't blow us out. It's the desert after all.

Course workers show up pretty early on Saturday. (Friday for May.) Tons of cones to put out, etc.
Tech inspection and registration 11:00-5:00. Earlier close if no vehicles in line. If I remember right it opens when course setup is done.
Rookie orientation at 4:00
Mandatory course walk at 5:00
Sunday drivers meeting is at 7:00, racing starts right after.
Tech inspection is open Sunday 6:00-7:30. No new vehicles on Sunday.

Port-A-Potties are the only facilities. There is a lunch truck that has reasonably decent food. The nearest town is Adelanto about 15 miles with Victorville about 20.
Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.
Just remember . . . It isn't life or death.
It's bigger than life or death! It's RACING.

Sum,
When you are down at El Mirage in June, come by and say Hi. I won't have the 300 car there but will be helping my friend out, Car #929 Red Cosworth Vega. We usually try to pit in the front row between the starting line and inspection area. See you there.

I stay in Victorville every meet I'm there for 2 days. North Vic for that matter, where they "leave the light on for me". I use it because it's kind of a straight run if you know the roads. A Denny's short stack will start any Sunday morning and I can walk to it. Adelanto has little to offer since the casino closed and it wasn't much. Good Luck...If you plan on getting in late on a Saturday night after walking the course and enjoying some caned bench racing, a reservation at any place is a must.........

From Las Vegas or San Bernadino:

I15 to State Route 18 in Victorville
West (about 12 miles) to State Route 395
North on State Route 395 (about 10 miles) to Chamberlaine/Crippen Rd in Adelanto.
West (about 2 miles) to Koala Rd.
North (about 1 miles) to El Mirage Rd.
West (about 10 miles) to the Mountain View Rd.
North (about 1 mile) to the Dry Lake bed.
West (about 4 miles) to the start line.

This came off the SCTA website. If you click on El Mirage on the front page, the next page gives you directions. If this does not work do a google search for the address if there even is one.

What would happen if you input Georga Callaway's address into you GPS?
I don't need directions, the place hasn't moved since my first visit in 1959.

Kaz,

When you get off at Highway 18 exit turn left at the bottom of the ramp. Follow 18 to a Y intersection and keep left at this intersection unless you want to see a lot of old Route 66 like I did last November when I drove out to El Mirage from Vegas
