Fire suit
« on: April 15, 2007, 08:35:13 PM »
so I plan on running at El Mirage in May.  i will be running as a rookie and limited to 150 mph -
No problem.  But here is my question,
I have a fire suit 3-2A/5.  I know if i was running in the class the car is built to I would need 3-2A/ 15.

So will they allow me to run with my current stuff -  or am I going to have to upgrade?

If a car is only running at half of record speed, the requirements are the same as if you were running record speed.
Remember the longest time you might have to wait for help is when a fire eats up the time and you are stopped.

Carl, you gonna need a new suit, Johansson,
Buy a 3-2A/ 20 and some extra peace of mind.  You may change class or surprise yourself and go fast enough to need one.
As long as you are buying anyway, it is just a few bucks more for the top of the line...

it is possible if you send in a written waver it get a variance...doesn't happen much..... and the contest board usually wants the request letter 45days in advance of the event....your kinda screwed on that one....a 15 suit might be on the rack...a 20 suit usually is custom made...

I have a dark blue 20 that seats 2 that is left over from a Camero record project a few years ago.
The driver only wore it a very few times.
It goes back to when Dan was El Presidente.

Not for Sale

It is a collectible that only a few now know the origin.
It has carried the wearer to both the EM and Bonneville 2 clubs.
When I said it seats 2 , that was a reference to the size.
It is kinda of an inside joke.

I have heard a 3-2A/5 suit referred to as a "photo op" suit.

And the 20 is a Pillsbury or Michelin suit...  :-D
For some of us, we blame our shape on the firesuit, sure hides the real estate.

Perhaps when your pushing skills have improved over time you can back off to a 15.

If you are looking to save some $$ shop the manufacturers for returned suits and display models. My first one was from Diest and  X drag racer Gary Beck had returned. In 1975 I bought it for $150. It was a 3-2 at the time but it was upgraded to a -20 because later I kept it in perfect shape. I never hang them up. They lay in a suit case and we take them off immediatly after the run. No "I'm the hero driver look at me" in our family.

About 10 years ago I bought a Red Simpson -15 display model for $150. It was a little stiff and was faded except where the price list was attached. Also for a 6'4" guy but tucks into the shoes nicley.

My last one is a -20 bought about 6 years ago from a Leaf distributor. A beautiful standard design blue with a checkerboard pattern across the chest. Brand new display model for $375 at the LB Swap meet. a great find.

Good Luck and get the best one you can.

PS: I would were a gas mask if I pushed off "tip the can and the label too" Dave in the #811.

JD,

You mean to tell me you don't like having your breath taken away and tears running down you cheeks.   :-D :-D :-D. That is the fun of being around a car running Nitro.
