safest zr tire for 17" motorcycle wheels

Have been following the tire testing dialog closely as well as the shaving sidebar. Has anyone decided and/or what is the consensus which production, unshaved treaded ZR motorcycle tire is the SAFEST so far?

Greg, with all due respect, Bub's/AMA has "scrutineers".  SCTA/BNI/ECTA has "inspectors".  The "S" word is a tad fancy for my tastes, although if Bub's were to ask me to wear their hat and look at bikes I suppose I could live it it.  I'd probably have to do some community service work to regain the "inspector" title when I return to Earth, though.

In other words, I know that Z/ZR will get you approved at a BNI/SCTA/ECTA meet - at least 'til you push the record up over (what's the number -- 260?).  I don't know how AMA/Bub's will react, but I'd expect you'd be okay there, too.

You"re right of course. Scrutineer Clouseau doesn't have a ring to it. There are two considerations with my tyre choice; tech and my hide. It seems the B-56s seem to get the nod for the "hide" factor. I'm real big on this part of the equation.

Correct! Protect hide first, anything else second. Tech doesn't care past the DOT/Racing imprint and good condition. If you get past that, balance, balance, balance.

What speed do you balance tires at? The standard motorcycle tire balancer works at a pretty low speed. Are there harmonic problems at higher speeds?

The better question to ask is what tires are a disaster and should be avoided? Anybody know of tire problems other than the well documented streamliner issues?

Thanks to all who responded to this thread. I am an old rider no longer a bold rider. Don't mind gassing it when odds are stacked in my favor health wise. Hate component failures and want to minimize this as much as possible. This will be my first time to run on Salt after spectating last year. The degree of friendliness of almost everybody I ran into reminds me of club racing back in the old days and I appreciate very much the responses which dictate where the dollars go this week. The problem with this sport is that if you're not careful mills, lathes and expensive stuff start showing up and the wife can't park her car in the garage any longer. Good thing she likes Casinos.
