Orpheus - 1:43 scale
« on: March 18, 2007, 05:15:05 PM »
No, this is not a real racer, but a concept from 1963....in 1:43 scale.

I while ago I showed some picture from the model with the grey primer on. Meanwhile, during my christmas vacation, I finished the model.

Here some picture.

Nice.

Was it a concept in order to be built in 1963 or just an ideas thingy?

I wonder why it doesn't have aero spikes on the two wheel fairings as well...

Very nice. Almost as good as having a salt car to work on without large amounts of cash. Hope to see you on the salt :-D

In the sixties the chief designer (engineer) from Porsche was a man named Schmid. He got the idea for a hybrid record car. A jet engine which pushed the car with his exhaust forward (60 percent power) and in the same time the exhaust also moved a shovel wheel in the rear which turned the rear wheels (40 percent power) to keep the wheel powered rules from the FIA.

In 1960 he done a first concept and a scale model. After Donald Campbells crash at Bonneville in 1960 he modified the first concept into his second concept, the 1963 version which I built.

They start to built the car in Italy, but when the British goverment didn't allowed to sale one of his military jet engines for the racer (Donald Campbell was still trying to break the record for England..and the hell of it) to keep Campbell's chance for his attempt, the project was stopped.

I don't know what happend with the existing parts.

If my memory serves me, Campbell's car got a goodly portion of its propulsion from jet thrust too, didn't it?

Not really jet thrust, but this four big exhaust tube produced a lot of pushing power.

Don't forget, when Donald set the record in 1964 on a very bad surface, the 2005 Speedweek was in perfect condition to the Lake Eyre surface, he had only 7 miles - 3 for acceleration, the 4th was the measured mile and another three to stop. He went out of the measured (4th mile) with an exit speed of 445 mph......and still pushing
