.020 over bore rule
« on: February 05, 2007, 02:15:19 PM »
Thanks in advance,

I'm just checking out some things on my bike (A/PG 1650), need some clarification on this:

I'm under the imression that both ECTA and SCTA that the motor limits allow a .020 overbore from max size. So I'm thinking this means once your stroke is measured, you can mathematically figure out what the bore size would be to take you up that class limit. Then add .020 to the bore size for max bore allowed.

 Right ?   Wrong ??      Huh ????

Do a search on this web site for that .020 subject and read up on it while you are waiting.
You can expect the same cast of regulars to unravel the intent of that rule and the result.
The car guys don't have that luxury and can be expected to also comment.
It does generate a lively discussion and no public support.
ENJOY

Jim, that's the way I interpret it, and the way it's been applied to me personally.

My 1650 motor is the same as yours, 4.000 x 4.000. That comes out to 1647.4cc

At 4.003 bore, we're exactly 1650cc.

I got a 1650cc record certified in '02 with a 4.020 bore (1664cc), taking advantage of the +.020 overbore rule.

I also got a 2000cc record certified in '04 with a 4.030 bore (1672cc), legal as a 2000cc because it was bigger than 1650 + .020

Be aware, though, that there is no such overbore allowance at the Bub meet.

Understandable as it seems to be a "displacement disregardance" undefined as an "overbore allowance".

Todd, my buddy, I hate to say this -- but I think you've caught Dolanese!  Dang, friend, do what you can to get yourself clean from this treacherous malady.

I saw the .020 overbore subject come up yesterday and knew it'd likely have negative repercussions -- but geez, not you!  My condolances (mis-spelled on porpoise).

It is sorta like the ICU gown they give you in the hospital.
The case of the HD twin that used the .020 overbore allowance was just one of the unintended results of a bad rule made on behalf of 1 person.
With less costs to comply with the pre-existing class limits that the cost of 1 set of pistons for the HD.
The HD could have rune both classes within the limits of the classes they way they were with the same investment in parts and no sacrifice in speed..

That is correct.
But I bet if you had more input, the rules mistakes would have a more public airing with a better result.

Nothing has a more positive effect on lost credibility than admitting a mistake and making it right.

A Porpoise is smarter than the rulers would give the bikers credit for.
You can teach them a lot of things but try some dumb stuff on them  and they will bite the hand that seemingly wants to feed them.
