Another Modifed Roadster
« on: January 10, 2007, 02:41:52 PM »
Well the holiday's are over and it is time to get ready for racing!!!

I bought this car previously owned and raced out of Colorado.  It had a Toyota 2l engine and did set a G/BGMR record @ a little over 181 mph @ Bonneville.

I am going to run Mazda MX5 engines in a couple of different sizes.  This has already been a 2 year project that was supposed to run last year.  But due to the usual work health and $$$ it is taking a little longer.

The photo's were taken the day I picked it up...

Like any new project as you take it appart there are more things that you would like to change.

Out went the old water and intercooler tanks, interior tin, belly pan, motor mounts and a whole lot more than expected but as you go you find more you would like to change...

Saws all fun!!!!

The front end of the car had suppension, but the previous owner said that the car handled the best when it was pulled down to the stops.  I decided that since it workd the best with out any front suppension I would remove it and solid mount the fron in in the same location and not change the wheelbase...

Most everything that was not needed has been removed and now time to get parts back into the chassis.

I moved the driveline aver to the right about an 1 1/2" for more room in the drivers compartment, I like to be cpmfortable while waiting to run.  Once it is started you do not notice the discomfort of some car's.

Re install front end.

The drivers compartment is a work in progress.  I work o the front for a while then of course see something to do @ the back of the car.  New seat and tin in the drivers area is on the list..

Skipping ahead on the build .  Most of the fabrication is done and now it is paint and a little powdercoating done by my partner www.powdercoater.com, Scott andrews.

I also want to thank Nick Arias III www.atomicspeedware.com for the help in getting engine parts.

Mike Lefever www.mitechengines.com   AKA Dynoroom for consulting on engine stuff and being competition on who gets done first.

And the famous John Romero @ AEM on the electronics...

This is about as far as I am going to get for a while, I have to have back surgurey and I will be down for a while.  I hope to get the car done to make some test runs in June or July @ el mirage before going to the salt...

I have more pix and I will toss them up when I feel up to sitting @ the computer.....

Get good soon, Bob, and thanks for posting all the pics.  Also thanks for the email and pics, over the last year or so.  It's good to see the car coming out so well, and I hope you can get the cars record back (and finally get it past 200!).

When you get better, come by the shop and see my next roadster project.

Best wishes,
JimL
