Metal zippers
« on: January 03, 2007, 03:37:27 PM »
I need to replace my metal zippers on my bike leather race suit. I?m probably going to do this myself. I?m wondering if anyone can tell me what brand zippers they have on their suits or if anyone can give me a recommendation. I know some of you have had custom leathers done so maybe you know what you got or at least what your choices were?
Thanks!
Debbie

Our leathers were made by Z Custom in Huntington Beach, CA.  You could ask them where they get 'em -- maybe they'd share the source with you for your own work, maybe they'd say "No, send the leathers to us and we'll do the modifications".  Won't hurt to ask.  staff@zcustom.com  Diane's the lady that answers emails from land speed racers. . .

Thanks Jon. I'm guessing that I won't be able to afford to pay someone to do two suits for me and since I can sew and have a machine that will sew through layers of leather (and fingers) I thought I'd give it a stab myself.

I've broken 3 zippers in the past few weeks & it's really ticking me off. And before any of y'all get smart, I broke the pull tabs and lost some teeth but two of the problem zippers were on the ankles so no fat jokes!  :-D

I'll wait a few to see if anyone else has any ideas and then maybe I'll give your gal a shout. I try not to bother businesses with freebee questions if I can help it! I know first hand how annoying that is! Maybe I'll go browse some of the race suit makers sites to see if anyone mentions anything. I guess I could always try to buy just the zippers from the maker folks. Then I wouldn't feel so bad!

most of the industrial heavy duty zippers for bunker gear, military boots etc are YKK or YKK knock offs. try these guys:

Thanks for the link!

I have YKK on one of my suits & thats the one that lost the pull tabs & teeth. :( I'll have to try to figure out if I have the heavy duty or not.

I need to replace my metal zippers on my bike leather race suit. I?m probably going to do this myself. I?m wondering if anyone can tell me what brand zippers they have on their suits or if anyone can give me a recommendation.

My Vanson race suit and an older Schott riding jacket (not race) both have Talon zippers.  Both look to be pretty heavy duty.

ouch!  That hurt.  See you two soon.  My suit has the 15LB overweight stress zipper in them.  But I needs the traction.

Hehehe,
Guy, do you know what brand zipper you have?

Mark, I looked up Talon and found one I like but didn't come up with a source to buy.

Hoping for a little more feedback and then maybe I'll contact on of the custom makers to see
if I can purchase just he zippers through them.

Thanks & keep it coming!
Deb

Be mellow, Deb. The "March" meet is 31 March - 1 April, so you've got almost another whole month.

There -- feel better now?

Try http://www.zippersource.com/.  I found them when I thought of replacing zippers on some chaps.  You can tell them what material, size, zipper style, length you need and the prices didn't seem too bad.
