Tires
« on: December 04, 2006, 11:46:13 PM »
Hi guys,  I'm about as lost of a soul as you can be here on a tire decision??    2003 Mustang  Production class  3800lb car 200 mph +   The widest LSR tires are GY Frontrunner   4.5" wide??   Is this the typical tire.  I've seen the pics on Sumners Hooleys Stude and with 1000 hp + they are on 4.5's    Really.  I guess that too wide of a tire reduces force per unit area and  causes more drag but I'm thinking 7" rear and 4.5 fts.  I spoke with Dan about this and that was his thought BUT where does such a tire live?  :?   What would you guys pick?  Thanks!!!!    Jim

I wish we were making 1000HP.  More like 700-725 and hopefully 850 next year :-).

It is my understanding that Goodyear is on strike and that getting the landspeed tires from them is really hard at the moment.  I don't know where to suggest getting wider tires and really I think what we run would work fine for you if you can find them.

Good luck with your build and c ya,

Sum

The tires on Hooley's Stude (his car not mine :-) ) are Goodyear Eagle Land Speed.  Go to page #6 on the link that follows and then to the Land Speed tires at the bottom of the page:

http://www.racegoodyear.com/pdf/2006_price_book/eagle_dragway_special.pdf

We started and still have the 25 inch and the 28 inch.  We got two different sizes so we could run either one on the back.  That would in effect be like changing the rear gear ring and pinion.  We had no idea what the car would do the first year and made the first two runs with the small tires in the back.  Then we found the car would easily pull that, so we moved the large dia. tires to the back where they have been ever since.

c ya,

Sum

And be aware of where you put that ballast.  Not at the back of the trunk like you would to get out of a snow drift .

I got your PM and sent one back,
