Craig Breedlove's AMC-powered American Spirit ??
« on: June 01, 2020, 10:54:25 AM »
Back around 1970, Craig Breedlove built a ICE-powered trike.  It had a lakester-style body, separated widely spaced rear wheels covered by spats and the two front wheels were inside the nose cone 5" apart.  It was to run in three classes, a 373" GMC blown AMC V8, a blown 290" and finally, Barney Navarro's built-for-Indy AMC turbo six.

The car and engines were featured in a HRM Annual, but I don't remember if it ever actually competed.

A thorough Google search didn't find anything.  Old salts, help us here.

It morphed into the Screaming Yellow Zonker rocket dragster.

OK Packard V-8 ? here's a question for you . . .

If I'm not hallucinating, my memory tells me that in the very early fuel days of drag racing, Packard V-8s were very popular in the Pacific Northwest.  You haven't logged in and told us where you are from, but maybe that's where.  And I can maybe trust my memory about something that's real important in these times.

I remember seeing it at a nearby truck stop in 1969.

It had the red, white and blue paint on it at that time.

Interstate 5 was closed due to a heavy snow and I believe they were stranded.

So it might have some sort of Oregon connection.

In case anyone is interested, the car is still here in Wichita, KS at Creative Interiors. It's part of a large collection of cars belonging to a local businessman more well known for his vintage Bentleys which are driven on the streets frequently.

Yes, there were even some stock class Packard V8s up in Oregon beating the Chevys.

Lou Senter's blown 435" Packard V8 digger was reportedly the first to run more than 150 MPH.

I remember reading about Craig Breedlove's Screaming Yellow Zonkers car, as well as his English Leather car, a long time ago.
He was certainly ambitious.  My understanding at the time was that each of these cars was intended to act as a fundraiser,
with an eye toward using the funds to finance his land speed racing efforts.
