1000cc M-G
« on: March 09, 2020, 10:40:01 AM »
Picked up the Bike in November of 2018.  Slow to get started but really picked up steam lately.  Will be ready for speedweek 2020!  I'm working on getting pics sized for more pictures

Began Tear down process.  Found a lot of neglect!  Rust, half assed work, and complete lack of Maintenance.

Tore down motor to find a few issues but nothing detrimental to the engine.  More corrosion, wrong hardware, and lots of gunk.

When i bought the bike, it would not run for long.  I suspected the stator/rotor and I was right.  This year R1 had a notorious issue with the magnets coming apart in the rotor and ending up in the oil pan.  That is exactly what I found!  The rotor magnets were completely gone thus not allowing the bike to generate power.  Yamaha Rotor and stator is not cheap!!!  Luckily the magnets didn't leave the oil pan and I was able to recover them all.  I cant find the pics of the pan but i do have some of the rotor minus the magnets

Removed the head and sent it to Eric at EDR Performance in Oregon.  Full superbike head workup done.  EDR is a class act company that does phenomenal work!  Also found the keepers for the clutch basket broken so the clutch assy was removed and numerous bits and pieces replaced.  Used the micrometer to check the plates and looks as though some fairly new plates were installed prior to my purchasing the bike.

Found a set of Forks from a 1999 R1 on Good ol Ebay!  They have been machined and about 3 inches taken out of the fork leg to get the forks nice and low.  I dont normally have good luck with ebay but this was a good score.  Had to order 1999 R1 axle, fender, and some hardware to make it all work.

I wanted to get the subframe down lower in order to get my body position lower.  I disconnected the subframe upper bolts and swung the frame down until it was at a height i felt was good.  I made some small extension pieces out of steel in order to support frame.  I then realized that the material I used was too thin so I have since remade them with thicker material.  I ordered a PSR adjustable suspension link in order to fine tune my ride height.

Removed swing arm and inspected/repacked all bearings/bushings.  Dont have any pictures of the swingarm off of the bike.  While it was removed, I added ballast to the swingarm and then TIG welded the hole shut.

Got the new 1999 Axle in the mail for the 99 front end.  Of course Yamaha wants too much money for the tool to tighten the axle so a Grade 8 bolt welded to a socket does the trick!

Got the Head back from EDR and reassembled the engine.  Got the engine hung in the bike and then we began the tedious process of eliminating the unnecessary wiring.  Took quite awhile to go through the harnesses but I was lucky enough this go around to not have any issues.

One of the issues with a "naked bike" is all of the extra crap that normally sits behind the fairing has to be moved to somewhere out of the air stream and tidied up.  Was able to get all of the wiring into the frame which was quite the chore.  Kind of like stuffing 10lbs of Sh** in a 5lb bag!  I fabbed up a speedo mount as the factory mount had the speedo sitting too high above the top triple clamp.

I don't know what you used for ballast in the swing arm but would it be worth putting bungs in the arm so ballast could be added or taken out? I was thinking that you might want to adjust for rough or smooth salt conditions.

Nice work, well thought out.

Got a fairly nice day and decided the bike needed to see the outside of the garage for the first time in a year or so.

Had to relocate the Coolant overflow reservoir to somewhere other than the front of the Radiator.  Originally had relocated in to the rear but was concerned with chaffing on the metal hold down i fabricated.  Also put my finger right through the plastic reservoir as the plastic was pretty brittle.  Stole my kids water bottle and made up an overflow.
