Additions, corrections and deletions are welcomed !

There is only one(1) entry PER PERSON, and
"on board" timing - data, GPS etc is not included,
only off-board independent timing is used.

A few comments/questions:

Was Chris Carr's speed achieved in 2006, given that his fastest record was set in 2009?

Valerie Thompson's DLRA record was at 328.467 mph.

Did Dan Kinsey reach 289 mph?  The fastest I can find is 286 mph.

Anyone got any more detail on "Johnny Allen 267.08mph ..."?  What event?  Did he set a record? etc.

Should Jim Feuling in 1997 with a 3-wheeled streamliner be included in this list??

Additions, corrections and deletions are welcomed !

Typo noted - Loring is in ME (Maine) not MA (Massachusetts).

Driving the minimum roughly 400 road mile difference to get there just adds to the effort required to obtain those record speeds on the great course among all the great folks "up in the county".

A few comments/questions:

(You may be right)

Valerie Thompson's DLRA record was at 328.467 mph.
(You are right - and I corrected above)

Did Dan Kinsey reach 289 mph?  The fastest I can find is 286 mph.
(S&S tells me they have the time slip)

Anyone got any more detail on "Johnny Allen 267.08mph ..."?  What event?  Did he set a record? etc.
(NO record, but it was in published sources at the time)

Should Jim Feuling in 1997 with a 3-wheeled streamliner be included in this list??
(I am open to discussion on this.  The SCTA does not have a "trike" class, nor does it have a class for 2 wheels in front.
In todays market, yes Jims bike would be on here.  what WAS his best speed ?)

BTW, if three-wheelers are acceptable as motorcycles, that we have to accept the Breedlove 400+ car.

This what the FEULING web site lists.

Was this vehicle a car or a motorcycle, or ws it both?

RECORD    CLASS    VEHICLE - ENTRY    DRIVER    SPEED (MPH)    DATE    LOCATION
AMA    M/C    Feuling/Streamliner    Jim Feuling    288.550    11/97    Bonneville, UT
AMA    M/C    Feuling/Streamliner    Jim Feuling    293.433    11/97    Bonneville, UT
LSA    M/C OW    Feuling/Streamliner    Jim Feuling    332.103    11/97    Bonneville, UT
FIA    A II 10    Feuling/Streamliner    Jim Feuling    333.847    10/99    Bonneville, UT
USFRA    B/FS    Feuling/Streamliner    Mike Nish    344.114    09/01    Bonneville, UT

Notice that the two fastest records are in the CAR categories.

The two AMA Motorcycle records do NOT appear in the AMA records listing.

Still looking for more about Johnny Allen 1963.

Google reveals surprisingly little, but I think I have learnt:
  • Power came from a 351 ci Chevy V8
  • Bike may have been known as "Big John"
  • Top speed may have been 310 mph(!!), but unclear whether this is the claimed max achieved or the design speed
  • Bike difficult to control at high speed, which may have been why there was no record set
It seems surprising that this team's efforts did not generate more publicity, either at the time or subsequently.

One might have more luck looking for the builder of the bike:

Stormy Mangham, then running a small block Chevrolet in his motorcycle streamliner,

Thanks for the Stormy Mangham search suggestion and photo of Big John.

Hot Rod magazine of January 1964 seems like a good source of information.  From there I understand:
  • Runs were timed by USAC/Joe Petrali
  • 267.08 mph was speed averaged over a mile
  • There was another run at about 267 mph on the same day
  • Date was probably October 2
  • The team may have been aiming for 400 mph!
But who would have sanctioned a record and what class did Big John fit into?

But who would have sanctioned a record and what class did Big John fit into?

Well, that must have been a question they were concerned about.

I think I remember other happenings on the salt that were timed,
and of course Joe Petrali timed for others, like the AAA.

So these are official times, taken on the Bonneville Salt Flats,
by a disinterested 3rd party.

At the time, the SCTA handed bike stuff to the AMA,
and the AMA had 1) no class for bikes with car engines, and
2) no class for over 3,000cc.

Same with FIM, presumably.......
