New spectator!
« on: January 05, 2020, 03:14:06 AM »
I will be going to Bonneville for the first time this Summer. We will be camping at the Bend in the road area. We are planning on bringing our ?side by side?ATVs to move about around the pits. Several people  have told us that?s no problem. But our ATVs are not street legal, that is they are not tagged, ect. Will there be a problem driving them from the camping area at the Bend to The Bonneville Salt Flats? Thanks you in advance,

Having not done it myself, I don't know if you can actually get away with it or not.  However, it would seem to violate the BLM's rules, as listed in No. 11 of their stipulations.

keep off the pavement if not plated - if plated you can go anywhere - if no plate you need a current Utah O H V sticker ( still keep off the pavement with O H V sticker ).- get the sticker the month your going, as its good until the end of the month next year, that way you get two events out of one years pay. easy to get on line- you can drive alongside the paved road from the bend out to the salt with the O H V  sticker. -  , sometimes the B L M cops make a big deal out of it , sometimes not.

As of 1/1/2020 it appears Utah will not recognize out of state ORV permits.

They used to reciprocate with Oregon and a few other states.

I see Oregon took Utah off of their list but still has several states they honor.

Ok! Cool! I don?t mind paying for the permit, it?s like $25 , isn?t it? That will solve a lot of problems! Just don?t want to go to jail or pay a $250 fine and get my ATV confiscated. That usually ruins an event! Looking forward to a good time, hoping to bring a lot of friends with me and meet new ones there!  Thanks...

The permit fee is $30. and good for one year. They will ticket you and I am not sure what the fine is. This should be posted on the SCTA site.

I am wanting to do it legal, but I cannot tag my Utv in Oklahoma! I really don?t want to break camp every day and drive to the salt with my motorhome , unload and load and drive back and set up camp everyday! Hope there is a better solution!  I am sure I am not the first person that wanted to do this!

Bones, don't worry, have your off road permit... you can pick it up on the way there.  There is a well beaten path between the bend and the boat ramp, just follow the crowd... as long as you have a permit there should be no problem... Be sure to have some type of proof of ownership when you grab your permit.
See you on the salt

Outstanding!  That’s what I was hoping to hear! I have been to many events in the USA, sometimes the powers to be, embrace the event...... sometimes it’s like open season on tourists....easy pickings for the cops. Glad to hear that Bonneville is embracing !

Stainless1, I see you are from Kansas? Hope to see you there and thanks!

This will be our first trip to the salt, could you tell me the best time to get there? We plan on staying for a while, maybe the whole event. Thanks

As a SpeedWeek veteran of over 40 years, I've never stayed for the whole event.  And I know the classes and over 100 of the entries.  After 3 or 4 days, there's a certain sameness ? with a lot less entries still there.  I'm not trying to discourage you in going ? helll, I'll be there.  Just trying to help in your planning.

Thanks, Stan, I kinda thought that. So the first of the week would be best? Do folks get there early? At Sturgis, the biggest party and stuff is  before it actually starts!

That?s kinda why we are asking all the questions, we could bring a Jeep or a Bronco instead of the side by sides, we are bringing Harley?s. Might be able to bring the side by side , the Jeep/Bronco and the Harley......if I can fit them all on the trailer. Lol!
