The first 6 LSR cars were electric, going from 39 to 66 mph.
Steam power then reigned at 75 mph. The last steam car went 128 mph in 1906, then IC engines, mostly aero, dominated until the jet era.

The Steamin' Demon  driven by R. Barber 8/85 145.607 is the current  Steam RECORD in the SCTA rule book. The car was from Denver Colorado. Set when it took 3 runs to get a record. Not the world record, just a SCTA record but still impressive.
