Kart Racing
« on: November 22, 2019, 11:57:22 AM »
Hello all,
When I returned from speed week last year (2018) I was so excited to get back, I began rounding up competitors to split some of the transport costs from the UK.
I have been moderately successful, a number of motorcycles are now coming with me. Another competitor in fact the current UK record holder has also enquired about coming with his classic Go-Kart.
We are struggling to find an event at which he can run. As this will be his first trip to Bonneville he is realistic and is not looking to set any records so a timed only run will be plenty good enough.
Does anyone have any ideas of how we can get him a run?

Ian

It's relatively easy to find a place for him to run his kart at a sanctioned event.  USFRA has allowed karts to run in the not-too-distant past (maybe 6-8 years?).  I don't know if they do so now - but it isn't difficult to ask them about it.  There's a link to their site on our home page, but it's saltflats.com.  No doubt you can find more info there.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that USFRA officially terminated the running of karts several years ago.  They certainly did run them at one time, though.  I remember a kid (who, like Slim, was an "UP-per") running one in their 130MPH Club there around 2008.   I even saw them allow "powered street luges" (including a Harley-engined skateboard!) in the 130MPH Club.  But anybody who's interested in running anything out of the ordinary should contact them and ask for reconsideration.  The worst they could do would be to say "no".

Just looked it up but it doesn't hurt to ask.

put a tall roll cage on it, add a padded seat on top and call it a bar stool...  :?
or just ask for permission.... they are fairly good about allowing odd stuff to run if it looks safe enough for the speed specified.

Like all competitors you will need to follow the rule book. If it's an older kart it would fall into the lakester class with the newer ones in the streamliner class. Just get the proper speed rated tires, fire suit, fire bottles, roll cage, fire wall for the engine and fuel system: ect.... I would send all photos to the proper rep for the class and the chief inspector...Easy peasy nice and ...well you know.

JD, your answer applies to SCTA racing for sure... but they don't do any club racing or allow non-LSR vehicles to be timed.
So Ian, contact the USFRA and put your case forward... as stated, the worst that can happen is they say no!
