Tom Jobe passes away
« on: September 09, 2019, 11:00:02 AM »
Not LSR related but the last "Surfer" passes away. The team of Skinner, Sorokin and Jobe came on the drag racing scene in the 60's, kicked some major A-- for a few years, and left. The laid back "appearing" attitude fooled many but not those who knew them.
Over the last year Tom shared with all of us the Surfers exploits on You Tube with 50  fifteen minute interviews which are well worth watching. West Coast guys who kicked butt and had fun on a small dime.
RIP Tom

PS: I'll add a little more. Tom felt if you could run nitro why not 100% even tho that definately not the normal racer mentality of the day. He found also there was no use for a bypass pill and ran everything thru smaller nozzles for better atomization. One more was not using an idler pulley, he set the distance by using gasket thickness. As you watch his videos you can hear how they ran the same block and crank for 100's of races and how he figured out not to hurt valves and springs...JD

RIP Mr. Jobe, a thinking racer if there ever was one.
Unless it's crazy, ambitious and delusional, it's not worth our time!

This one hurts.

If you have not seen Tom's videos as suggested by J.D., you'll do yourself a favor getting to know and really appreciate Tom Jobe.

Let's not forget that Mr. Jobe DID have LSR connections.  Tom was involved in designing and building the body, as well as many other things, for Mickey Thompson's Challenger II, and again with Danny's effort.

These paintings (#7/30 and #19/66) are in my bedroom.  You might say I am a Surfers "fan"...

growing up an a dairy farm in East Texas  in never knew any of the inside stuff  that was a very riveting experience  I will go back and re-watch 30-36  what tenacity and research they must have done and what a resource they had in Engle.
Stinegger & Eshenbaugh from Phoenix also ran Engel cams back then and Al is still running early hemis on fuel successfully hand still has several fuel records with that eng.

"Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing."   Helen Keller
