Wanted: ford 7.5" 2.26 ratio gear sets
« on: July 27, 2019, 12:33:10 AM »
Hello gentlemen. I'm on the hunt for a set of these seemingly rare low ratio gear sets for the ford 7.5"  differential, 2.26 ratio or 2.29 some people say. I need two sets as my project is four wheel drive..... Thanks in advance

If you're not already committed to ford stuff I have some (high ratio-low numerical number) 2.29 7.5 10 bolt sets. I'd have to check but I think there's 3 or 4 sets plus I have some 2.41's. 10 bolt's also allow you to step up to 2.14's if you need a little more gear. A Torsen spiral gear LSD 28 spline carrier is an off the shelf item or even used on Fleabay.

Thanks Sid, I am unfortunately tied to the ford center section. I didn't realize that there's a good possibility ford only listed that gear as an option and never actually made many of them. The search continues ......

I called over 150 wrecking yards all across the USA and found two sets of Ford 8.5 gears that can be used in Ford 8.8 rear ends they are not the drop in Pumpkins they are from American Axles which are like the GM 7.5 8.5 and 8 7/8 rear ends

The 2.26 gears are for the 8.5 ford diff. I got a set from IWE rear ends only for Summner. The 8.5 is the predecessor to the 8.8 diff. The gears fit but I found you need to machine a small amount from the pinion where the shims fit as I couldn't get a good pattern even after taking out all the shims.

One more thing. The yoke comes in 2 versions, the standard ujoint type with the half moon cups, and the flange style with a flat flange. The ujoint style only comes for a 1310 ujoint which is smaller than the standard HD1350 joint. The flange can be fitted to a driveshaft flange that takes the heavier 1350 joint.

Talked to the guys at IWE today,  Excellent conversation with a guy, wish i could remember what his name was. Turns out that they are out there but most of them have been bought up by the salt flat guys ! Ha Ha,  so I Guess i'm looking in the right place. Thanks for all the help so far,  for those that have suggestions regarding other diff types i am stuck with the 7.5 sort of permanently. You can see why if you check out 67bajabuilder on youtube.  Cheers.

I noticed this thread is getting quite a few views,  Is there more people out there looking for these ? Makes me think about investigating the costs of going the custom made route if nothing turns up.  Curious now if there are some threads on the topic, or if I should start one...

:dhorse:   Those of us that have found 2.26 gears are telling you that they are for the Ford 8.5 that we installed in 8.8 housings which are like GM 8.5 and 8.7/8"  what are we missing ---- Sid is trying to tell you how to skin this cat
