Gauge wiring
« on: June 16, 2019, 01:07:46 AM »
I need wire color codes for an AutoMeter Pro-Comp Ultra-Lite water temperature gauge (full sweep). I can't find the answer on their website. Assuming the red and black wires are power and ground, that leaves a gray and a purple wire. The sensor has just one terminal. Anybody?

Are you sure the "gray" wire isn't white? Which would be for the lighting. Some gauges use a two wire sender. Is the sender you have the one that came with the gauge? Gauges that use the 2 wire sender won't work with the one wire ones. The two wire sender is like this:  https://www.amazon.com/Auto-Meter-2252-Electric-Temperature/dp/B0009RYGXG/ref=sr_1_1?crid=LC5RMPAJ8AWO&keywords=autometer+2252&qid=1560684903&s=gateway&sprefix=autometer+2252%2Caps%2C126&sr=8-1

I have one of these installed in racecar in the trailer. If you still don't have it figured out I'll go look at it but purple wire is ringing a bell.

Jack- I went out and looked at my gauges. I have a more or less regular water temp (not the Pro Comp Ultra lite) that uses a single green wire for signal to the single pole sensor. I have  Pro Comp Ultra Lite oil temp ( I expect is same technology with different face plate) which uses a Gray and Purple wire as you have and it uses the special sensor/sender I posted earlier. They are not interchangeable- had that conversation with Auto meter as when redoing this car I had used the single wire sensor in the prior one and as the sensor is $25 from Amazon and I had a single wire sensor I asked. Nope. So becomes change the gauge or change the sender and you need also a special small plug for the sensor.  Little two prong thingie. Autometer lists it but don't know if available elsewhere easily.

jacksoni- I posted last night but it disappeared?
I think you nailed it. I hadn't realized that the full-sweep gauges use a special sensor, so i had bought the wrong Autometer sensor. Got the other one on order now.

No worries. I saw it. Seems the forum upgrade grabbed it. :) Glad could help. Been following your build. Best of luck.

If the sensor does not include a mating plug and I have to come up with something, can you tell me which gauge pin gets the purple wire and which gets the gray wire? Or doesn't it matter?

It seems to matter. If you look at the connector end of the plug, one side is flat, the other has curved corners. With the curved corners up, the purple wire is on the right, gray left.

Thanks again. The sensor arrived today, with no mating connector. But I found a connector on the old harness which will work. I'll give it a try tomorrow.

Just to double check- you're referring to the plug that's mounted on the sensor?

Yes, sorry was not clear. The female socket end of the sensor.
