Air Dam Construction
« on: June 05, 2019, 03:52:44 PM »
I have seen a lot of racers adding a piece of flexible material at the bottom of their air dam so they can get the most effect from the dam but deal with the realities of moving their car around on an uneven surface (salt).  I am thinking about adding a piece to the bottom of my dam so my question is what type of material are you using and how close to the salt are you getting without having issues?  I am thinking about using 1/4" rubber.  I have seen some that look like plastic.  What is the best material?

I sort of hesitate to admit this but I have used a flexible plastic that I get at a local garden center (Home Depot etc) that is used for lawn/flower bed edging. About 4" wide and needs some stuff trimmed but flexes and not too hard. Will take a set if you bend it and keep it there but will go back with some massaging and maybe heat, gentle. Works well and inexpensive.

Paul;

This is UHDPE (ultra high density polyethylene) that's used for all sorts of things. Useful stuff!

What thickness do you use?  I'm thinking 1/4" but that may be too thick.  I want it to give and not bend the dam.

The stuff Speedway sells is about 1/8". It would work for very short dams. Thicker stuff can probably be purchased from a plastics supplier- ask for UHDPE.

It needs to be pretty flexible. I think 1/4" will bend the dam if you hit any more than a small ridge. As turn offs are not always well marked or you just don't see some ridge it is a risk.
