FIM Rules on Leathers
« on: March 15, 2019, 11:51:42 PM »
The FIM rules state "Full Leather Suit" to be worn,,

I am aware that thay require "one piece" leathers,,

Are streatch panels on the inner arms and croutch area, as found on modern day racing leathers allowed ??

My leathers are two piece that zip together around the waist.  They have passed FIM tech annually for the last eight years.

This is Hiro Koiso, the fastest guy at BMST 2018 where he set an FIM record at 259 and change. Looks like stretch panels on the sleeves and pits.

This is Pietro Zanetti the slowest guy at BMST 2018 where he also set an FIM record. Looks like he has stretch panels too. Good thing he had an aero hump, as I think he went 18 or 19.

Confusion reigns ,,

I have run FIM at Bonneville on two occasions (2011 and 13), before these events I was told that my zip together two piece leathers would "not" be allowed so I had them sewen together, now one piece, no problem,, thay did not have stretch panels,,

Have also been advised that stretch panels(inner arms and ctotch area) do not fit the "Full" Leather rueling ?????

I am about to purchase a new set of leathers, can somewon, (Drew??) please confirm what is actualy required  :? :-)

Best bet for asking Drew a question might be by using the tech email. That worked well for me last year.

FIM are more relaxed about stretch panels than SCTA
I have always run 2 piece , with nearly full circle zip
current Airbag Dianese are the same, the one piece race suits were so restrictive i went with the 2 piece

Sounds like a lot of folks are confusing FIM and SCTA rules.

From the rule book:
2. P. (IV) LEATHERS
Suits made of synthetic material are not permissible. The use of stretchable Kevlar and perforated materials in non-critical areas are permissible. Leather suits shall be one-piece design or joined by a full circumference zipper at the waist.
24 V15.1
Leathers cannot be too big or loose. Critical area (knees, elbows, forearms, shoulders) armor or 2-layers of leather is highly recommended. Due to invisible flames, riders’ of motorcycles burning fuels of Methanol content are recommended to wear Nomex underclothing or something of similar nature.

From the "FIM" Rule Book, page #36, 2.11 Protective Clothing and Helmets,

2.11.1 Riders and passengers must wear a "complete leather" suit with additional leather padding or other protection on the principal contact points, knees, shoulders, hips etc

2.11.3 Riders must wear "leather" gloves and boots, which "with the suit" provide "complete" coverage from the neck down.

2.11.4 Leather substitute materials may be worn, provided thay have been checked by the Chief Technical Steward.

I sent a email to Tech@bonnevillespeedtrials.com ten days ago seeking clarification on this, to date no reply

It has been a month since I asked the question, still no clear answer,,

Big "Thankyou" goes out to Pippi2 for doing her best behind the scene to get a clear and concise ruleing,,

Emails have been sent to the BMST Tech Stewards "NOTHING"

I am about to get new Leathers made, and want to be "certain" thay meet FIM approval,, as seen on here there is a "interpretation conflict" in the wording,,

Time ticks on
