What speed rating are the tires you have?  How old are the tires you have?  What class are you planing to run?   With which organization are you planning to run?  What tires are on the bike now?
The answer may be the tires you have... depending on your answers

I agree with Stainless. A stock HD Sportster will not have enough speed for tires to make much of a difference. Your stock tires are probably H-Rated which is good to 130 mph and a stock sportster will not go that fast unless you do some tweaking to the engine and gear ratio. Just make sure they are in good condition, are newer, and have good tread depth and you will be fine.

If you plan to run a mostly stock Sportster that will run under 139.999 MPH I suggest you start your Salt dream by running the USFRA 130 Club.... It will give you the opportunity to run the salt reasonably and see how LSR works.  The rules are online and street legal vehicles are allowed to run... you won't need a chase crew... you could ride in... run.... ride home.... a great adventure, bring friends
