The idea of using trucks to bring back the salt is an easy idea to grasp, but thoroughly ineffective and inefficient from an engineering perspective in terms of time, money, and labor. Every scenario advanced was considered and found to be lacking merit, and/or feasibility. Getting the salt is not the problem, conveyance is, and the best methodology to return it is to use the same process that extracted it. Period.

Of course, anyone wishing to buy a bag and dump on the playa is welcome to feel better about helping to restore the flats, just as long they also understand it will be inconsequential.

Building salt crust thickness requires 4 very specific steps annually: precipitation, evaporation, percolation and desiccation. Each working in harmony with the other three.

Metaphorically, it is like intake, compression, ignition and exhaust.

Yep they have been  strip mining the salt flats for 70 years, it will not get fixed in a couple of years... unfortunately they will continue to strip mine under the guise of returning salt by flooding with low percentage brine that effectively  washes more salt down the drain to be taken back across the road.  When they can no longer get enough potassium chloride income supplemented by the sale of salt with trace amounts of potassium chloride they will walk away.  It is a Limited Liability Corporation, they have very little to lose... I'm sure by now they have already completely depreciated all their equipment and buildings many times over by changing owners.

With the open drain in the tub there is no compression and the engine won't run - metaphorically!  :-P

There is nothing new in the STS documents.
All I can see is the burden of cleaning up the mess is being foisted on all taxpayers and Intrepid & BLM get a free ride.

Does anyone know what Intrepid claims the pumping cost is per year?

I can't find the info that used to be at Save The Salt such as how much salt? or brine  was pumped each year.
If we knew that info, some of the math wizzis here could figure out how much the electrical cost would be.
The size and hp of the pumps would help.
I know there are other cost involved such as maintenance ect, but hard to find out what is involved.

What is the taxed value of Intrepid Potash mining at Wendover?  50 million?

I saw (on the internet?) they were getting paid to lower the altitude of the flats – 'cuz more rain falls on higher elevations (or something like that).

They get paid for the salt they're taking off.

From a SEMA News email I got a few days ago...????.

Utah lawmakers have appropriated $5 million toward a program to restore the Bonneville Salt Flats, contingent upon securing federal funds. The money and funds will be used to create a 10-year, $50-million program to dramatically increase the amount of salt pumped onto Bonneville. The bulk of the monies will come from the federal government, with contributions as well from the motorsports community. Beginning in the ?60s, the salt crust diminished due to historic and current potash mining activities under existing leases from the Bureau of Land Management. The mine owner has been pumping salt since 1997, but planned infrastructure upgrades will increase the volume. As a result, the racing venue should gradually expand from its current 8-mi. length, with a goal of reaching the original 13-mi. length.

Sounds like still waiting on Federal taxpayer dollars.

Looks like Utah's money is safe. not likely for $50,000,000
coming from the Fed.

To bad Utah didn't fund it directly  5,ooo,ooo for 12 months  $416,666 per month, 5 yrs $83,333 per month, 10 yrs $41,666 per month.

Anybody no the cost of pumping?

If some of that money doesn't buy a "PERMANENT DRAIN PLUG" anything pumped will go right back to the mining operation. :dhorse: :dhorse: :dhorse: :dhorse: :dhorse: :dhorse: :dhorse: :dhorse: :dhorse: :dhorse: :dhorse: :dhorse: :dhorse: :dhorse: :dhorse: :dhorse: :dhorse: :dhorse: :dhorse: :dhorse: :dhorse: :dhorse: :dhorse: :dhorse:
