We didn't get to run, either.

With all that time to kill, it became apparent that getting to see the people we only see once a year may be a great reason to attend.

I'm not looking at the event as a failure, but I guess everyone would not come without the goal of running.

I understand that we have to make the best of the situation,
but.......
I know that if I would have invested all of the time , money, and effort into getting to Speedweek,
I would consider it a huge failure if I wasn't able to run.

We were ready to run.  It just didn't make sense to run under the conditions.  Sure to go slow (at best) and a mess to clean up.  Our choice.

Jon,  thanks for the hard work getting the live feed up and running. I was traveling for work and couldn't attend in person but because of your effort it sounded great and was the next best thing to being there. Rickr

Stan, if that is supposed to be a link it isn't, If it was supposed to be a file it still isn't. What ever it was you have my interest, what was it?

Well after a four day drive out and the return drive home were back in CT. This years salt was by far a complete failure after waiting until day number four for the opportunity to make a run all of us were hoping for the best but it was not to be. The surface conditions were horrible at best.  Just towing to the staging was an early indication of what we were getting our self's into good thing I had four wheel drive to pull my stuff out of the soft salt on the way into staging those deep ruts caused a number of stuck vehicles what a mess.  Rumor has it the towing company in town was charging a handsome sum to get some unlucky souls out of that mess. Prior to my one and only run just before leaving the line I was told by one high up SCTA official the coarse was JUNK! Boy he was not kidding never have i seen ruts so deep and bad all over the racing surface.  My car is so low I can not see the surface very well however it was easy to see the poor surface conditions due to there depth and numerous amount.  So another year is now over thankfully my car myself and the engine are fine.  Maybe one day i will return but truthfully there needs to be some serious thought about a good race coarse. Now some will say the rain did us {I agree it sure did not help}but i ask if thats the only reason this year was so bad how is it after the firth mile it was dirt no salt at all the rain did this or am i missing something? This year might be a record for the least amount of records set especially by fast cars and bikes.
But there is a bright side to the event seeing friends in person the one time each year and of course listening to the event announcers while waiting in line for hours and hours.    Heres an in car video of my run hold on tight.

Ron, the salt was salty out as far as I went - about the 7 1/2 on the long course, and the 4 1/2 on the short/rookie course.  It was getting thin and therefore kinda gooey, but it was salt.  Just not good enough to drive on more than casually.

It looked so good leading up to SpeedWeek. Sucks it went bad for everybody. I had many problems that kept me from going. Maybe next year?

I know there were much higher expectations from many racers, reading some waited 7 hours to run never feels very good, and reminded me of the mid 70's when that was the norm at the begining of any of the Speedweek at Bonneville. I looked to Thursday results listed on the SCTA-BNI page and found it interesting that it appeared to be like almost every Bonneville's week of making runs near the end of the week. I realize these will be short course but there were many vehicles making multiple runs as high as 10 by one competitor. This can only tell me many packed it in when car's/MC's under 175 could have learned a lot. Yes I know the course wasn't that good but seat time is important even driving on a "not so good track" will help especially multiple guys are trying to get a chance to get behind the wheel.

There are a lot more records under 175 than over and I feel guys gave up to quickly. Bonnevile has always been in the hands of mother nature and it does seen weird to me that and one day quick storm could do so much damage but we all know what we are up against..JD

I got 8 runs in on the rookie course , got my e license , could not get over 60 mph.  , barely got out of second gear because short 1 mile . first time to put any seat time in. was a blast. myself and crew learned a lot , think we have it dialed in now. k diesel streamliners aren't exactly high speed runners.

In looking back on the SCTA's Facebook updates, it appears things weren't that great even before the Thursday night squall.  They were talking about just three courses back in late July.  At that time, they said it was still too early to groom the long course.  Of course, the squall didn't help.  It was an adventure every time we had to drive through the end of the staging lane area.

Even though we were plagued by turbocharger problems (lost a couple) I was still able to get a couple in and get my "B" license with one good pass at 191.   That was definitely an adventure, too!

In looking at the results, it appears there will be no new red hats this year.  Has that ever happened before (when the meet actually took place)?
