Silly season class question
« on: December 08, 2018, 12:31:49 PM »
I currently run G/CPRO with a 2 liter engine that was of course available in my 1979 Porsche 924. I've been spending a cold December morning here in Kentucky musing over an engine swap to a 3 liter Porsche 944 motor that was of course NOT available in my 924. In reading paragraph three of 5.D. it appears to say I'd be legal to run in Gas Coupe (F/GC) with that engine swap. Just asking for a few extra sets of eyes/brains to either concur with that conclusion, or point out the error in my reasoning/reading skills  :-D.

The fact it's silly as you point out & the fact you're still a young man, I'd say you should be repowering it since it sounds like the 2 liter isn't blowing your skirt up anymore!

You can use any engine 3 liter you want in f/GC. Maker doesn't matter.

If the block and head are the same ( I have no idea) and is only a bore and stroke change, you can run production. In fact a REQUIREMENT of /GC ( among other possible) is an engine swap. Sorta what RichFox said.

Separate question: why were you running F/ with a G/ motor. If the latter wasn't legal displacement of course but that is a big handicap. (60ci).

I acquired a 924 some time ago, and have familiarize myself with the foibles of the platform (924/944/front-engined super beetle). I don't recall a 3 liter engine coming in a stock 944.

I'm also pretty sure the 4 lug cars with the 2 liter used a different engine than the later 5 lug cars (944) with the 2.5 liter engine.
I have no idea what I'm doing... but it seems to be working!

I'm not all that familiar with the fine points of the 924/944.   However, you might want to be 100% sure that your car would actually be legal in GT.  I was researched running a car of similar layout in GT a couple of years ago, mainly based on the loophole in the rules for engine swaps in the GT classes.  However, the rules guys informed me that my car could not run in GT, because of the rule that reads: "Body styles produced with jump seating for more than two people like a Datsun 280ZX 2+2, Porsche 911, or Honda CRX, even though they may have only two seats, will be considered a Coupe and Sedan and must run in that class.   I did a quick search and found pictures of 924/944 upholstery for what certainly appears to be a rear seating area.  I doubt if the fact that it may only be comfortable for double-amputees would count.  At any rate, I'd suggest you get something in writing from the rules committee before you spend any money and/or get protested.

Jack:
If I confused you with wonky sentence construction, I apologize. I am in fact running a G (2 liter) engine in G/CPRO. what I'm pondering is swapping in a 3 liter to run in the F engine Gas Coupe class in the future. BTW, unlike ECTA, the SCTA won't permit a 2 liter G class engine to run in F. If they had, I would have bumped up to F/CPRO and tried to set that record as well (since it's below mine).

Old is a condition people grow into by choice & has nothing to do with the numbers on the clock, if you don't use it you lose it.
Happy birthday to your mother, she's obviously got it sussed!

Jeff:
You're probably correct re: GT, but the class I was pondering was GC (gas coupe). However in reading that rule more closely before replying to  your comment it appears the 924 would be illegal in GC because it was built before the "1982 to the current year" GC rule threshold. A 944/968's would be legal there since they are post 1982 cars. That said I hate the idea of starting from scratch building another car from the ground up!

If it didn't run in Gas Coupe it would run in Classic Gas coupe. I think you are reading way more into the rules than is there. At this time, if I were you, I would explane exactally what you want to do and inquire of Jack Masson   J.masson@att.net   and set your mind at ease.

Also, if you have some circumstance ( non OEM EFI for instance) that made the car illegal for Classic, it would run in the appropriate non Classic class. Although your reading of the date rule is correct, I was under the impression that you could run in the non Classic classes if you want to. That may be wrong so take with grain of salt...… ;)
