In what class?  Was it FIA-sanctioned, in one of the SCTA lakester classes, or what?

Yep, they did set a record. FIA sanctioned, special construction which under FIA rules includes both covered and open wheel cars. They were looking for 400 KPH which is around 240 MPH if I remember correctly. Two run average of 244+, took a Nish record. Car was really loud when you watched from the timing tower, big wheels and tires out in the air, engine sound not so much.

The late Captain Billy and I certified the engine as a 3 liter v10. Mike Cook's Land Speed Enterprises was the organizer.

If I remember correctly 400 km/h was a self-imposed target. Possibly they also wanted to run a "legal" F1 specification, although I'm not sure the moveable fin fell into that category. Record speed was of the order of 247 mph/397 km/h, so just missed the 400 target.

Records were subsequently raised slightly by Speed Demon, before Jim Knapp smashed it out of the park.
