The consensus from what I gathered was that Dave deployed the first chute, but the pilot hung up on a latch.  He then deployed the second.  As the second chute deployed it freed (tore loose) the stuck pilot chute, but it tore some of the strap fabric.  That was enough to snap the line and it promptly broke.

What a Great Run, Man thats what Land Speed Racing is right there.
What a great team, The Vesco Family, Like the Thompsons ,The Class of Our Sport .
What a great Driver, As we saw when it got loose.
If watching that doesnt just get you, There may be something wrong ,Haha

There is a good article on Don Vesco in the September/October 2018 "Classic Racer" magazine.  It is on the newsstands now in the US.  The magazine I got was purchased a couple of days ago.
