Spam in Messages
« on: September 08, 2018, 10:05:09 AM »
Troubleshooting a problem that's been temporarily fixed.  The forum got shut down because of too many messages, no doubt due to spammers.

Has anybody got personal messages that are spam?

Thanks,
Bob the Web Elf

Dunno, the database is well within the allowed size, and the host didn't give many specifics of the problem.  Actually, deleting some wouldn't help at all unless everybody did it.

I dunno, Bob.  I see I've got 209 pages of PMs.  Maybe it's time to teach us how to bulk delete. . . :?

Bob, thinking when a message hits 90 days, maybe the system needs to delete it... kind of like the self emptying deleted items in gmail.... if you need the info, save it somewhere.... else
Kinda like you don't have to go home, ya just can't stay here  :dhorse:

Counted up, there are 306,125 individual messages.  I like the idea of deletion after a certain time.  I'll also look into bulk deletion, if for no other reason than keeping your stuff tidy.   :-)

15/page on my list, making me the holder of about 1% of all the oldies.  Hmmmm.

So, what? 20-30 meg of storage?  There are messages that are records of things that I've purchased that I'd be unhappy if they were arbitrarily deleted.  Surely that can't be a problem for a robust forum software suite.

Mike,
Nobody's going to delete your stuff.  I'm just trying to figure out why the host shut the forum down back when, and what they see the problem as.

Hah!  If you go to your messages, on the left is a little menu.  At the bottom is "Prune Messages".  That sure worked for me.  Use it if you want to clean out, but don't feel obliged.  Just a few people doing that won't make any difference at all.

As I said, I'm trying to figure out what problem the host saw....
