Best salt I've seen in 12 years
« on: September 02, 2018, 11:35:33 AM »
Just got back from BMST and the salt is the best I have ever seen in the last 12 years I have been going.  WOS is in for a real treat as long as it doesn't rain!!

"Ever" is in the eyes (and years there) of the beholder.

I remember having Impound at the 11.  Now you'd probably need 4WD.

Yep, it is relative to years in the recent past or far past.  I wasn't there but from talking to those that were it still sounds like the salt is extremely thin.  Sounds like what is there spread around for better overall coverage vs. the last few years.  Also sounds like what is there also dried into an incredible smooth, hard surface.  Hopefully thickness will be added in the future, but with continued mining I doubt that will be the case.

Yes Summer the salt was very thin but thankfully extremely hard so it held up very well even under the fast and heavy cars. Being so dry the salt was not sticking to the cars as much as it did the prior two years. Any significant moisture will certainly hurt the surface and change things in a big way.

Subject: Re: Best Salt Ever!

This subject can be very misleading to John Q. Public, as they will say what are the racers complaining about, I read on a forum where it was the best salt ever.

I hope the BLM is not reading this, as it will give them ammunition to undermine what we have been saying for years.

The salt is still very very thin. It took only 15 seconds for the water from the cooler to break the salt crust into mud. The pumping and Mother nature took care of us this year. Who knows what next year will bring?

Hopefully someone who cares about LSR will win a big lottery, they can buy the Mining company, and get all of the salt South of  I 80 back on the racecourse.

Wishful thinking.

I would tend to agree. To say "Best salt ever" is misleading and just not true. Best salt in the last 10 years, maybe. But nowhere near what even I remember when I first went.

After watching the "in car" video from the turbinator's amazing run, it shows the lack of salt beyond the Four Mile (+or-) which shows a whole lot of brown.
You cannot see this in Danny Thompson's videos because of the camera angle/sun reflection.  A five minute thunder shower could have turned the Long Courses into a disaster.  I could not see where Danny's car got loose on either of His two great runs but My guess is that His tires were spinning thru the thin salt crust at that point.
I hope that it stays dry thru the W.F.'s or the top end is going to be very dangerous for the competitors and their vehicles.

In 1972 I bent tent stakes trying to drive them into the salt.

The heck of it is that if misleading statements regarding the true condition of the salt become the norm, any effort any of us make to apply pressure on the BLM will only make us look whiney or schizophrenic.

Dose the BLM and general public follow this site, huh,,

Not sure how you are going to hide the fact that's out there in the media that a record number of cars went 400mph plus, and there was a bunch that went high 300's   :-D,,
