Good luck at Speed Week, Steve. I won't be there to see your Bantam run, this year I'm going to try the World of Speed at Bonneville in September. It should be a little cooler then.

Nancy and I left the house this morning - Bonneville or bust! Brand new truck, no trailer, wow - so much less to pack when you don't have much room.  Jamestown ND tonight, Big TImber MT tomorrow (and yes, Doug, we'll wave as we go past), SLC Monday night and the Salton Tuesday.

Obviously we've got all sorts of connectivity with us so get in touch if ya need to do so.   And yes, I think I've got all of the equipment with me for the streaming.  I even brought Chris's donation of a microphone so we can have a dedicated ambience mic.

See you on the salt.

You aren't gonna believe it.  As Nancy and I drove in from Land's End to the Compound - it was smooth.  Really smooth.  The whole danged way in.   Smooth and dry.  Yeah, it got a bit moist as we arrived at the pits, about 4 miles from Land's End.  And yeah, out by the 5 about halfway between the return road and the course - the salt crust was buckled and only a half-inch or so thick.  I'll post pics later.

The salt is kinda sticky - some accumulated on the truck and our shoes, but still --

Gee-ZUS!  The salt looks better than it has for a LONG time - at least a couple of years.  And the long course return road won't break your spring shackles this year.

YIPPEE!!

Oh, yeah - they're sealcoating or paving or something - right smack down the road from the truck stop, with flaggers and sticky tar nd everything.  Sure glad they decided to pave now and not last week or something.

Bring your mineral spirits or kerosene to clean the crud off your vehicle.

My traditional first photo - showing you the salt conditions.

Here's the salt out about the 5 mile, between the long course and the return road.  Crusty, yeah, but still at least thee's salt.

Some people will always be out there providing income to the Salt Cat driver...

Bring garbage bags and tape for the inside floors.

How do you break in a new truck?  I got it one week before this picture was taken - about 2200 miles from the dealershio.

Nancy took a photo of me admiring Prozac's do for the event.  I'll say no more.

Note:  Gas out here is about $3.10-3.20/gallon, and diesel is about $3.60.  YIKES!!

Some cultural input:  Nancy and I ate at the Copper Kettle (nee Poblano Taco, nee others) tonight.  It's the little restaurant right next to the Post Office in Wendover.  It's a fine place to eat.  Well, maybe it coulda been better -- Cree and Steve Straw were there.

The Salt Flats Cafe Metro is looking good, with a nice crowd for a Tuesday before SpeedWeek.  Last year we saw they'd posted a note to the local folks:  Please stay away for the next week because we'll be jammed with racers." (or words to that effect).

For other after-racing pursuits - follow the sign:

Here's the front door of Carmen's.  Don't let the patina be a concern, K?

Other new stuff in town: Right behind the W. Wendover Welcome Center there's a micro-mall with a quick lube shop, a dollar store and a couple of other new shops.  It's brand new!  I didn't take a picture.  At the west end of W. Wendover there's now a store open kinda in the same building as the hardware store across from Smith's -- and it's a smoke and head shop. I don't remember the name of the place - musta been good, hey?

Other stuff:  The salt thins out and turns kinda brown out around the 4 1/2 on courses 1 and 2, but it's still pretty good - especially compared to recent years.  Out between the courses there are crunchies but not bad.  You shouldn't plan on driving out there with your race vehicle but it isn't terrible - don't worry too much.

The return road from courses 3 and 4 is good.  No more potholes, and it's pretty firm, too.  Don't go too close to the dike - I saw some standing water...
