Terry Nish has died
« on: July 07, 2018, 10:27:24 AM »
Bummer!!!  I just read on the Bonneville 200 MPH Club Facebook page that Terry Nish has passed away.  I'm sorry to hear that - and Nancy and I send our best wishes and sympathies to the entire Nish family - and that's a big family of racers.

I'm proud to say that I was with Terry when Mike finally got the car over 400 mph.  That was one awestruck and profoundly satisfied man.

And the memories will roll on and on forever.  Thanks, Terry.

I first came across Terry in the 70's when we ran a pavement sprint car against him. I've always considered him a REAL racer. He'll be sadly missed.

Rest in peace Terry. You deserve it.

Pete

A big loss for the landspeed community. Our prayers and condolences go to Terry's family and friends.

That's terrible news for me and the LSR community as a whole. I really liked, admired and respected Terry for all his efforts. We spent many hours enjoying each other's company. My very best to all his family, crew and friends. I will never forget you.

Have followed the Nishes from afar for a long time. Only chatted with Terry a couple of times - definitely a racer's racer!

My first encounter with the Nish family was as a spectator at the Bonneville Raceway bull ring circa early 1980's. Terry drove a Super Modified (rear engine, I think) and competed against a very formidable "Wild Bill" Madsen and other notables. To this day, I don't know how cars could go that fast on such a small oval, let alone race. I owned an engine machine shop in SLC at the time and a good friend, Dave Mott, repaired or modified many race cars in the area. Last one I remember was a front suspension rework for the Vesco/Nish streamliner. Oddly, all the years I lived in SLC, I never once made it out to the salt flats.

Fact is, the racing community and LSR in particular, lost one of their best. See you on the other side in about twenty years, Terry.

There were several videos posted when he talked about his team, cars, and their plans and experiences.  He sure seemed to be a nice fellow.  He was humble about his considerable success.  This was refreshing to see.

I watched a good number of those videos and kept thinking how great it was that he took the opportunity to sit and tell the stories.  SO many racers don't.

Thanks, Terry.

I have a tattoo of the Nish streamliner, when I showed the tattoo to Terry he said "what the hell did you do that for?"
Then he went to the trailer and got me a t-shirt. My first experience at Bonneville was in 2008, standing in my Dad's pit when we heard the Nish streamliner coming down course one, he went by us at 386 MPH and every hair on my body stood up and I got teary eyed.
I have been back every year since, besides the rained out one.
Thank you and God speed Terry
No regrets

Terry was a major supporter of the USFRA starting back in the early days.
I gotta wonder if the group of our racers that have past have found great salt and are having racing discussions all the time.   It really sucks to lose our heroes.
GodSpeed Terry, condolences from my racing family to yours
