Speaking of seeing stuff on the salt:

As i drove past the rest area near exit 4 I sae three or four cars and a Harley way the heck out there - a few hundred yards or more away from the pavement.  No doubt the most in many years of me looking out there.  And from that info you can form your own opinions on how wet it is.

I posted my recent report on the salt - sitting in my truck parked in plain near view of the salt flats camera.  It was about 12.10 local time.  Anybody see me?

Yeah, I saw you.  Sometime, I would like you to pinpoint that exact location on a map so that I can get an idea of just exactly where the camera is located.  There is a movie with you in it at

It is fun to watch all the activity in the background today.

It's smoke, Ron. California is burning and we're getting the benefit up here in Utah.

I see some activity this morning on the salt in the area of where the pits were located during Speedweek.  I wonder what is going on?

I have looked at this shot almost daily for a long time.  I have seen years when there was a lot of water during the winter and others when it was dry like it is now.  I have not been able to determine if there is a relationship between flooding and the condition of the salt bed.  I know that when warmer weather comes, that snow that you see on the mountain off in the background, will melt, and that water will make it to the salt flats.

Maybe someone else has some knowledge or observations.

Living in Utah, I can say that my experience over the years has been that when we have really dry winters, like this year, we usually have a very wet spring, or really bad thunderstorms in the summer that are hit or miss.

We had the longest stretch without rain in the history of Utah this fall, but we are seeing winter storms start up finally.
