Gary Allen. Obituary
« on: January 29, 2018, 11:34:55 PM »
A dear friend and past President of USFRA has passed away.

Gary Don Allen
Sep 19, 1948 - Jan 20, 2018

Gary Don Allen, 69, passed from this life on January 20, 2018 after a lengthy illness. Visitation will be held with the family on Saturday, February 3, at the Ogden Valley Community Church 9228 East 100 South, Huntsville, UT in Huntsville, Utah from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., with a Memorial Service held at 3:00 p.m.
Gary Don was born in Winters, Texas on September 19, 1948 to the late Robert (Bob) and Ina Allen. He lived with his parents, sister and brother on a farm near Norton, Texas and attended both Norton and Bronte schools, graduating from Bronte High School in 1967. Gary Don married Kathy Kiker on June 27, 1970, and they moved to Lubbock where he attended Texas Tech University. After graduating in May 1972 from Texas Tech with an Industrial Engineering Degree, Gary Don accepted a position with General Electric in San Jose, California, later transferred to Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and then to Arkansas City, Kansas. He then worked for Sunstrand in Bedford, Texas and San Diego, California before becoming a Director for Williams International in Ogden, Utah. Gary also worked at Chromalox and Hill Air Force Base.
Gary Don and Kathy enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest with their two sons, Michael and Marc. Gary Don loved traveling, diving, horseshoes, and playing sports. He also loved to drive his motorcycle or T-Bucket and frequently could be seen driving them around the valley in the summer. Gary also enjoyed winter in the valley and spent time riding snowmobiles and plowing with his tractor. Gary and Kathy had many hours of enjoyment watching wildlife in their yard.
As much as Gary loved all of his activities, his passion was racing at the Bonneville Salt Flats, which was an important part of his life for many years. Gary was President of the USFRA for many years. He was inducted into the 200 MPH club in 2002 with his home-built racecar and went on to register a land speed record of 237 MPH which he still holds. He also set a record of 262 MPH in the Higginbotham-Allen streamliner and marked a top speed of 316 MPH. However, one of his greatest contributions for the Salt Flats community was his advocacy for the preservation of the Salt Flats. He played a major part in the "Save The Salt" movement through his research and testing, which helped reverse the depletion of this unique natural resource for generations to come.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Travis Daniels; brother and sister-in-law, Rowland and Mary Allen; and nephew David Allen.
Gary Don is survived by his wife, Kathy Allen; children, Michael Allen and wife, Nicco, and Marc Allen and wife, Miranda; grandchildren, Prea Allred, Kemen Allen, Lawk Allen, Ashton Allen and Mason Allen; and several nieces, nephews and extended family members.
To celebrate Gary’s love for the Texas Tech Red Raiders, family and friends are encouraged to wear red and black attire for the service.
