I've been in a salt mine about a third of a mile under Detroit. It's big -- full-size earth movers and loaders, and we rode around in Jeeps. The vein of salt (so to speak) extends across a good portion of lower Michigan, although I don't know of other commercial salt mines there. I do not know if the salt was used for dill pickles or slippery roads.
