Position for Water Methanol Tank
« on: November 01, 2017, 02:28:22 AM »
Hi I was hoping someone could help me, I plan on running 20% methanol 80% water injection on a stream liner.

Want to mount the tank under the seat just wondering if the 20% methanol is considered "Flammable" so will need a fire wall?

Cheers
Ian...

Good question.  I'd remove all doubt about getting an unwanted answer at an unwanted time - tech inspection - by figuring out another location behind a firewall now.

Coolant additives not normally flammable can become flammable under pressure, it has happened.

That should be behind a fire wall & just in case you don't realize, that will put you in fuel class.

What's the reason for injecting water into a turbine engine?

Basically to keep turbine temps down, the engine I am using came from a helicopter designed to be used over the North Sea in -20 temps, not on a salt lake at 110 degrees.  :-)

That's interesting, will you inject it in the intake or beside the fuel nozzles?
Will this be a 3/T class liner?

Hi Sid, we will be ΩT2 class 500-1000 kg, engine and car are a bit heavy to get down to ΩT3.

We will be injecting straight in the front only when the temps demand it.

This is a little video of where we are at with it at the moment

Ian;

Nice project! ... and with a Rolls-Royce engine, something we don't often see at Bonneville.

Thanks for the video link Mate, you have a good looking build going there & that was the first clue to your Oz location. You can be anywhere with an accent just like I am but the true blue square tubing gives it away. Is the upside down quick change relative to engine rotation?

Hi Sid & Neil, I have been loading a build diary on the Australian page if you are interested http://www.dlra.org.au/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2698&start=60
Unfortunately a lot of the images have gone west due to the Photo Bucket situation.

Yes the up side down is not just because I am in Australia... :)

In the build diary you will see I needed to chop up the turbine gearbox to get the power output in the right direction as well as the right rpm. The diff in that position means I can have an almost level drive shaft, but I needed a special reverse direction ring & pinion. The plumbing is mainly to keep the input shaft bearings cool since they are at the top now in air and not in the oil bath at the bottom.

Cheers Ian...
