wire between spill plates
« on: September 19, 2017, 09:53:07 AM »
I am considering using wire between the front portions of my spill plates, similar to that as used by funny cars to keep the spill plates from pushing out.

Below is my setup.  Comments welcomed as to necessity and class legality (ALT and CC)
Breaking Wind #9614
  ECTA Record AA/BGALT 214.8
  SCTA Bonneville PB AA/BGALT 237.4
Breaking Wind "Spirit of Effluvium" #451
  SCTA Bonneville Record SC/BF100 48.931

I don't think you need them.  Not sure what gauge Hooley made ours out of but never had a problem and the car was sideways a couple times .

I wondered about the current configuration with the wing but there again the car was sideways and the large verticals kept it from going around  and weren't damaged,

Remember that even a thin wire has surprisingly high drag. A small brace made from thinwall streamline tubing will be a better choice.

Those funny car ones are super thin also.  You won't have a problem

Like Manta22 wrote those wires are an aero drag which is not what you want for top speed runs. Look on Youtube there's interesting experiments that show how much drag even the smallest diameter round surface has compared to a tear drop shape.

Remember that wire ONLY works in tension so it will carry load if you pull on it but not if you push on it. I agree with Neil, some nice small section aero tube will give you strength in both directions and look a lot better!! All present day funny cars use the aero tube approach.

Wires used for biplane wings can be either streamlined or not. Check with aircraft spruce or wag aero.

And I am just quessing here..But you`d want to triangulate the tubes  to the center line to prevent them from acting upon one another in a spin. maybe.
I`d never advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone...But they work for me.

Thanks for all the input.  It seems like a tube is the best all around.

How many cars now use or don't use wires/tubes between their spill plates??  Why put yourself to an aerodynamic disadvantage if it isn't needed??
