LSR Motorcycle Helmet
« on: December 08, 2017, 11:35:25 AM »
I just discovered the LS2 brand of M/C helmet. These are made with extra-tall (3/4" taller than standard) viewports for seeing straight ahead while being tucked in.
My problem in the past was that I could not bend my neck enough to see down the course while being tucked it. I am hoping this helmet will help with that.

They are DOT approved so are good for BMST, but I am not sure about SCTA (Snell ratings).

I am going to find one at a cycle shop and check it out.

It looks like it is also certified for ECE Moto GP standards, which if like in the past, is acceptable at ECTA and/or LTA.

This does bring up a point that unfortunately I know of a few fellow LSR racers who have purchased helmets a "tad" large so they can push up on them during a "tight tuck run" and to be able to see down the track.

I don't go that far, Ransom, but I have had my bifocals ground so the reader portion was high up in the lens - otherwise I couldn't see the tach. when I'd scrunch hard onto the tank and my glasses would ride up inside.

Thanks for the link.  It will be forwarded to Arai, Shoei, and Simpson to see if they make a helmet with similar tall eye port.

Shoei replied to my question about tall eye port helmets.  They recommend their X-14 model.  They say some salt flats racers have them and like them.  The helmet was developed for GP racing and it has a tall eyeport.

I looked at the X-14 model. It may have taller eyeports but the LS2 is taller. Also Shoei may make a nice helmet where the street rider wants the best and is willing to pay for it, but it costs $700 vs $200 for most other helmets with the same safety rating. For one or two races a year I don't think the extra cost is justified.

Anyway here is a side by side:

The Arai folks gave a reply to the question about tall eye port helmets.  They say the "-X" series with VAS shields gives the best view and might be good enough.

They make a Quantum-X for round oval heads and a Signet-X for long oval noggins.  Some of the riders in the triumph club fit these special size helmets and that is what they wear.

These tall eye port helmets are news to me.  I just bought a basic Arai-Vector 2 for next years BMST.  It is the low port normal design.
