You jogged my memory when you mentioned "Tectyl".
That stuff was developed shortly before Pearl Harbor and it was a Godsend to the US Navy in salvaging the ships sunk there. Instead of complete disassembly to de-water electric motors and machinery, Tectyl was sprayed into them; it displaced seawater and allowed the motors, etc. to dry quickly and be returned to service.
