Steve,

I got the hole saws a couple of days ago. Thank You for everything you did to make my order happen, especially under the extreme weather conditions you were experiencing at the time. Also thank John and Cynthia for their help in making this purchase possible.

Thanks again,

Tom G.

Steve, the Care package arrived.  Thank you very much.  Everybody else:  I managed to somehow sweet-talk Steve into getting some of the vaunted hole saws to use as swag for Salt Talks this year.  Hey - maybe even before then.  Whenever they go -- thank you very much for getting them to me, Steve.

I tried out a couple, just for the heck of it.  Great stuff -- managed to cut some "D"-shaped holes in the concrete and a few using the figure-8 one.  They work!

Thank you very much.

You are much more than welcome, Slim.  Regarding those D shaped holes in concrete and the figure 8 hole saws, the forum is going to want some pics, for sure.

I don't have any figure 8's, but I do have an oblong one. :-D  That's why I ordered new arbors.
Thanks Steve.

Maybe we could come up with some sort of foolish "Challenge" like the ones that have gone viral on Facebook.

You know... like the ice bucket challenge, the hot pepper challenge, the mouth full of cinnamon challenge, etc....

We can call it the 4" hole saw challenge.  I'll donate the hole saws.

Contestants will be put to the task of cutting a 4" hole through a 3/8" thick piece of steel plate, using nothing more than a 1/2" electric drill, a 4" hole saw, and an arbor.

Fastest time wins.  Sit back and watch the injuries pile up.

Especially if the steel plate is 5" square and not fastened down.

Just for the information of those who want to use a hole saw properly I built my own arbor and mount it in my mill. The material I'm drilling gets put in a proper milling vise or clamped down firmly to the mill table. I generally use either a mist or a flood coolant. The resulting holes are round and precise and if anything, very slightly on the small side. A hole saw when used properly can be a precision tool.

I agree with Peter Jack on this one.

When I was notching a lot of tubes, I made a custom arbor to chuck in a lathe, and used plenty of lubricant/coolant.

Another big key to hole saw usage is choosing the proper rpm based on the diameter of the hole saw.  There are handy charts available to show the maximum speed recommended for any given size.
