rear end parts compatibility? Ford 9"
« on: January 02, 2017, 12:21:18 PM »
I've got a 9" from a 63 Galaxie that I'm considering using for the lakester I am building. I want to run the later 2.47 or 2.50 gears and a torsen differential. Look like Moser offers a torsen for 9". Does anyone know if those later gears will work with my axle and carrier mentioned?

All 9" gears will fit all 9" housings. The Lincoln 9 3/8" gears fit if you grind clearance on the housing flange to get them into the housing. A new gasket is already notched to show where to grind. The 9" ring gears are different thicknesses so they all use the same carrier as opposed to GM where you have to use a carrier matched to the ratio.

Hi, Even if the gears will fit any case the problem of bearing size is still there.  Early cases used a small bearing that will not allow 31 or more spline axles to be used.  Use of a B case will do the job in most cases.  By the way I still have 4 sets of 2:30 ratio.  Mike  MF Performance

Can I pick your brain about a Jerico? You can message, call 402-677-9636 or text if you're OK with it.

The Ford 9" has some power loss thru the design of how the gears work, Strange Engineering offers as 12bolt Chevy design that fits into the Ford case.  Check their website and look for '12 Bolt Drop-Out Case' to read about it.

It's a hassle fitting a 2 series pinion in a Strange drop out housing and requires a custom spool . 8.8 Ford gears are an alternative . The pinion should require a lot less clearancing and I believe all ratios fit the same spools . Has anybody done a drop out 8.8 with a ratio in the 2s ?

8" for sure, but I didn't know there was a drop out for 8.8's. I thought all 8,8's were intregal, but I've been wrong before. Just curious for my own info.

Here's a low-tech answer to a question not asked . . .

31-spline axles are not needed for a 9-inch in almost every land speed car.  There's not that much traction to deal with.  Stock 28-spline axles are just fine -- from my mentor who ran AA/BFR.  Worked for us over 200 with seven records to brag about.

Same for me. But I only went 208 in a fairly light car.

HI, Ron I'll try to call you this weekend.  A torsen diff. is a good choice for the salt.  Besure to use a steel case unit and check to see if the break away torque can be set.  I know that with an Eaton torsen diff. it can be set.   Mike MFP

I may be interested in one of those gear sets. How can I contact you?
