Source for "Premium" bolts other than ARP?
« on: December 20, 2016, 04:21:32 PM »
I'm looking for a source of M10 x 1.0 bolts, in a "premium" grade, like an ARP type bolt.  ARP doesn't have the M10 x 1.0 in the length I'm looking for (preferably 40mm, or about 1.5" under-head length).

Does anyone have a recommendation for a supplier other than ARP for bolts of this type?

I wonder if Premier Industries, in Cleveland, is still around.  They made "Supertanium" fasteners in the 60s -- they were an honest grade 8.  Dad used to be their midwest sales mgr -- I've still got some of the old stuff in the box.  It was cool having him work there -- we'd get garage passes for Time Trials at Indy.  Cool stuff for this teenager.

They were a mfr, so they might - assuming they're still in business -- end up sending you to a distributor.  Good luck.

While there are some places who offer the Grade 8.8 metric stuff, I'm not sure that I want to use that grade for flywheel/crankshaft bolts.

I'm hoping to find something more like a 10.9 or 12.9 (or better) grade in M10 x 1.0.

How about checking with a European car dealer and looking for flywheel or crown gear bolts?

VW flywheel bolts are that size, but the ones I remember are only 35 mm long

I was told by a Cat mechanic years ago when I still had a truck that any bolt that had the Cat "C" (no grade markings) on the head is at least a grade 8.
There was a discussion on this site years ago about hard bolts. Wouldn't know where to look now. IIRC the recomendation from SCTA was not to use the really hard ones as the head would pop off but I don't remember the specifics.

Boltdepot.com list several metric bolts in10.9. Good people to do business with and you can buy 1bolt or a case form them.
