Nancy and I had stopped for fuel in York, Nebraska late morning Saturday, and then back on I-80 headed west. That's when the phone calls started:
Joe Timney said "Turn around!", Wayne Yates said "Race cancelled", and so on from Terry Russell, Glen Barrett, Mike Meierle, and even Jack Dolan.
Thanks to all that took the time to look up our phone number, which I had listed on this forum in case of just such an eventuality, and call us.
When we told Glen we were in Nebraska he suggested we go back to Lincoln and visit the Speedway Motors Museum -- but when we got there we saw the sign on the door stating "Tours BY APPOINTMENT ONLY ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY DURING OCTOBER THROUGH MAY" or something like that, so we just got back on the interstate, put another talking book disc in the machine, and rode on.
We've got Kent Riches' bike in the back of the pickup -- thought about doing an extended road trip to San Diego to drop off the bike, but even though the idea of seeing Kent was entertaining -- we came to our senses and realised that we needed to get back to Marquette to rake leaves and get the new furnace installed at the house and stuff like that. Don't worry, Kent -- we'll get the bike to you somehow. Have you tried getting a price for shipping from uShhip.com? It might work out -- otherwise we can drop off the bike in Toled when we go to Maxton at the end of October.
Oh, well, so much for this year's Bonneville season. We had a great year, and sure look forwad to seeing everyone again soon. Thanks again to those that called us Saturday. (By the way, who called Saturday evening and didn't leave a message? Thanks for trying. . .)
See you next time, folks!

I just got a phone call from BNI official.
Just to clear things up. The meet was officially called at 10 am utah time. 9 am Cali time. SCTA-BNI worked their fastest to let people know from that time forward that the meet was cancelled. NO earlier was the meet called.
The SCTA website did not show an immediate post because their webmaster was in route to the salt. I was able to get it out there soon because I had a computer at my finger tips...
The bottom line we all worked together, this site, scta site, volunteers calling everybody in transit to let them know the word that the meet was cancelled. Great job for everybody.
Thanks again SCTA, BNI, USFRA, DLRA, Mike Cook and the private meet participants for a great racing year for me. 5 Events for me this year and it was great...
Now checking on the salt flats in Peru.... Lots of salt 12400 ft... Makes ours look tiny...
Jon

Jon I think you and the SCTA did a wonderfull job in getting the word out as quickley as possible. Just think if this was 1965, with the lack of computers and cell phones. there would be alot of people on or on there way to the wet salt. Slim, just drop her off at my nephews in Toledo on your way to Maxton and i'll get her shipped from there. Thanks again for the help. kent

JD --
20 miles north of Ely? The McGill Club opens at 11 a.m., and is worth a visit.

I was on the other side of McGill when Wes passed me.. As I made my calls Cell range ran out and I had to turn around. The Club looked pretty dead when I passed going up.

All -
Was stuck in Idyllwild, CA (actually, not a bad place..) all weekend with NO phone or Internet, and thus never saw the news. Monday night at 9pm I left Banning and drove more or less continuously to W. Wendover, and when I hit Mickey D's for a bite to eat I was suspicious that there were no race-type machines or even street rods visible. Drove out to the Bend in the Road and viewed the Reflecting Pool. Very pretty.
Oh well, I continue on to the East Coast on Thursday, so I'll find something to amuse myself around SLC tomorrow.
Jon's comment about the Peruvian Salt Flats reminded me that I actually went there in 1982. As long as he is referring to the same ones, they are located along the only actual highway into the country of Bolivia (most people go there by train), coming out of Ariquipa, Peru. The "highway" is mostly dirt, has mountain switchbacks with NO guardrails (lots of little crosses with flowers by the sides of the road!), and is deemed unsafe to travel at night because of the truckers coming down out of Bolivia into Peru.
Actually, I think the flats we visited were at 14,000 feet - maybe that means there are others. Anyway, the flats were immense, but the altitude was crippling - you couldn't even walk briskly without gasping for breath. I'd say that turbos or blowers would be a requirement in order to run fast. Come to think of it, the bus we rode in had a turbo'ed diesel engine.
Hmm, time to revisit the Cragar Cool-Air system?

That's starting to sound like a place that I wouldn't like to have to rely on local emergency personnel to pull me out of my crumpled up race car! Giving me a lead bullett to bite on during surgery might be a luxury.

Thanks everybody. Went out to the lake this morning and is a sheet of water. We have now made our way back to Salt Lake City and have met up with Terry Nish who was very kind and showed us through his race car. It was a wonderfull opportunity to see a vehicle that I have read so much about. Thank you to all who have posted offers of friendship. My wife and I are planning to try and return for Speed Week next year. Hopefully there will be no rain then. Thanks again, best regards, Lin and Trevor DLRA 136

For everyone that was ready to run World Finals:
At Noon Wendover time, go start your engine and clean it out several times.
All the better if it's a Nitro burner.
At least if it blows up at home it saves you the cost of the trip and you have plenty of time to rebuild before Speed Week next year.
Plan ahead...................
