Tire Run out?
« on: July 17, 2016, 11:44:02 AM »
just bought new Goodyear Front Runners, 3 year old ones were dry rotted to hell, and the new front runners run out about .160. Actually more like a dip in the tire. Put the old ones back and they run out about .120, more just out of round. Anyway, saw this video that I thought was interesting.......

I guess my question is should I try to address this?

The fellow in the video needs to lose the gloves and shirt sleeves before he looses some body parts.   :-o

It may be a little trickier if the tire surface is rounded and not flat.

Any tire recapping business will have a machine to correct any tire run out. The tire is trimed by a blade the final finish is done with a right angle hand grinder. Had a set of front runners corrected that way a few years ago.
Working in the shop I use the 'F' word a lot. No not that word these words Focus and Finish go Fast and Flathead Ford!

Wait a minute!  If Burt Munro could shave his tires with a kitchen knife and then coat 'em in shoe polish -- what'sa matter with a loose sleeve or two and maybe a goofy-a** jig and the wrong tool and - so on?

That rig is nearly as frightening as the gas powered/farm implement wheel/ax head wood splitter. I`ll find the link. You will lose sleep. :-o
I`d never advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone...But they work for me.

Ooouuueewwph -- that's scary.  I think I'll stick with getting the wood split by throwing $$ at it.

Bias ply tires take a set (a flat spot) if they have been doing anything but laying flat since the last time they were hot. Even brand new tires can be stored wrong to cause an out of round condition.  Front runners are Bias Ply. before you balance or try to true them you should do something to get them hot and rotating. Driving is the best.
Heating in the sun and spinning fast while up on jacks might work. And then balancing shouldbe done while still warm before they cool. I'd bet that shaving isn't necessary to correct out of round rubber. I'd also bet they were round and even when made and siting on the thread has deformed them.
