Welcome to West Wendover!
« on: July 14, 2016, 06:56:46 PM »
Welcome to Speedweek 2016 and the Wendover area!

I've lived in West Wendover since 2002. I'd be more than happy to share with you places to eat, things to do, nice hotels, etc. Just hit me up and I'll try to answer any questions you may have.

Be safe, and pleasant travels to our little slice of heaven,

Brian

For those that might wonder, Brian's been hanging around this site and offering help for a handful of years.  If you've got questions or stuff like that -- ask.  Seriously.

The Salt Flats Cafe, out at Mile Marker 4 on I-80, is where all the locals go to eat. They make some dang good Mexican food. They also have good hamburgers. There's also a new restaurant in town on Main Street (Wendover Boulevard) that's called "The Copper Kettle". It's really good. Tell Manny Carrillo, the owner "hello". He's a great guy and a really hard worker. He's also on the Wendover, Utah city council.

It's my understanding that the ice cream shop doesn't make much food anymore. They only serve ice cream. Manny, the owner, opened up a restaurant across the street called "The Copper Kettle" and it's really good. Not bad prices either. I'd guess the average meal is $8-$10 per person. Not bad!

For some of you that may not have been out for a few years...

The Red Garter Casino completely remodeled their restaurant. I have to admit, prior to the remodel, it was gross. It is now VERY NICE. The prices are still the same as they've always been, CHEAP. They have a great MENUDO on Mondays, if you're into that stuff. Lots of American and Mexican foods. The Mexican isn't too authentic, if you know what I mean. It's the Americanized version of Mexican, except for the menudo on Mondays. It takes a special breed to eat that stuff though.

I've always really liked the Red Garter food and especially the prices but the wait to get your food is HORRIBLE.  It's bad every time we go to the point that we just don't go any more.  After a 14 hour long day out on the salt, the last thing I want is to wait an hour for a meal.  Every once in a while we'll say 'ah screw it, it can't be that bad' and we'll go back and try again and yup, insane wait time.  I really wish they'd do something to improve it - or maybe we need to improve our luck.

This Copper Kettle -- is it in the building that was Taco Poblano and another before that?  If so -- great.  It'll be nice to have another place to choose from.

YES, that's the place! It's been completely remodeled, too!

bboatman - thanks for taking the time to help us out.  I plan on camping at the "bend in the road".  Is there a place in town to fill up my RV with water?

Great question! I'm guessing that you could fill up at the KOA or Nugget RV park. Besides those two places, I'm not sure.

We are booked at the Red Garter, we always like to start out with breakfast there anyway. he Salt Flats Restaurant is the place to go for Mexican food for sure.

There was a place that looked like an old Dairy Queen that was remodeled into a Mexican food Restaurant, but it seemed to be closed the last time we were there. Was that the one owned by Manny?

And Oh yell, I may need a few MPH out on the salt while we are there, is there a place in town to buy some of that?
