Hi, all.  I agree that what the salt looks like about now has little bearing
on how it will look several months from now.  But here's my report anyway:

I was there on 5/25/16, late in the day, on my way back from Montana,
headed to California.

The salt was wet, but it didn't appear (from land's end) to be a lake
several -- or even an inch deep  (at that location).  I didn't see any
tire tracks at all in the salt.  I am very glad that it has the ability to
"heal" itself, even though that ability is surely limited by lack of salt.

The color was white-ish (very pale grey?), about the way it looked
the last time I was there for Speed Week, in 2013.

On 5/25, anywhere east of land's end, I saw no dirt spots or any
other areas that didn't look covered in salt.  But it was mostly dirt,
instead of salt, on either side of the paved road for much of the drive
along the last 2 or 3 miles of the road.  I think that it's pretty much
the way it was in 2013.

EXCELLENT!  That type of description is exactly the kind of thing i was looking for when i started this thread.

I understand that "nuthin' means nuthin' " at this point but still I welcome your observations.

Nothing really shows for the first few months and then close to the time

the real conditions are apparent.

We can't do an ultra sound of the salt flats.

I sure hope (along with THOUSANDS of others, I'm sure) that this whole Bonneville thing works out. I don't want to have a million hours in my streamliner then have to ship it to Australia, because there's nowhere else to run it.

Okay, we are two months out from Speedweek, any updates on the salt?  I saw where they got more rain last weekend, wondering if it is drying out yet?

I was there last Thursday.

Did not leave lands end, BLM was there and so were their signs.

One small puddle at lands end but other than that it looked liked it was drying nicely.

What do their signs have to say?

"Motor vehicle use is closed at the Bonneville Salt Flats when the salt is moist or has standing water on the surface. Please protect the Salt Flats during wet conditions. Thank you."

Not a bad thing in my opinion, unless it keeps us from racing, Don

Your guess is as good as mine.

I've never seen them before.
