Dolan/Jeffires EXP - LN7 article?
« on: April 16, 2016, 01:03:27 PM »
Help a mentally diminishing pentagenarian out, please.

I seem to recall an article in Car and Driver (?) in the late 1980s that covered the Dolan/Jeffries EXP/LN7.

Is my recollection correct?  Was it a different LN7?

I'm sitting on HUNDREDS of Car and Driver and Road and Track mags in my attic that I acquired from a friend who was throwing them out, and the only reason I took them off of his hands was to see if I could find this article that I have a VERY fuzzy recollection of.

Is my recollection bad - it's as likely as not - or does somebody recall this article and when it was published?

Thanks for the help.

They started out with a Ford escort engine in a roadster. Running on a 125 minimum at El mirage, it didn't do it. So Doc stepped up to the Ford Serra DOHC 4 valve version and that went 130 of so at the dry lake. I had a Pinto in my roadster and went 128. not fast enough. So I got the Jensen Healey motor and that did the trick. I think it went 136 on the dirt and 141 on salt. Got the roadster record until the Honda S2000 powered car buried me. Jefferies and Dolan, I understood, bought the EXP/Tracer what ever from Holman- Moody with a very breathed upon Serria and ran that after then. They never put it in the roadster that i know. So i don't know how much faster it would have been. A bunch I bet.

My wife, Joanie, drove the Merc at Bonneville. Around 110 IIRC. She decided that she then understood what us guys were excited about at the end of her run.

Mike, that article I was able to find.  I suspect the article I THINK I'm looking for hasn't been digitized.  87, 88 ?

I know the car still creates quite a stir.

I will try to dig some, have memory of seeing an article, maybe Hot Rod. It was my understanding (possibly incorrect) that the Dolan Jeffries car was the same one that Leonard Emanuelson then editor of Hot Rod (or some position) had set record in GT class the year or two before. D/J ran as G/GT as you and the CD article point out and then ran in GC, ALT and CC classes with records. Interesting that the C/D article suggested that the 255 WHP translated to 332 flywheel. That is a "moderately generous" 30+% drive train loss, somewhat more than the usual 12-15% your see for stick shifts and lead to the comment that that number was "generous" ( and considering it was mostly stock with some tuning and fiddling with the VTEC timing and only went 154 pretty much puts the 332 number in the can. It is also more than I have ever seen for a S2000. Anyway, suggests that Jeffries 400hp from a N/A gasoline 2 liter was equally specious. They did run pretty well though. All their records have been broken. mostly by a variety of Hondas and one lowly pushrod Pontiac.

I haven't found the HR article but did dig up some other info. Emanuelson set H/GT and G/GT (can you say FWD engine change) in 1981 at 135 and 140mph.In 1986 Jeffries set G/ALT (gas), G/GC, G/FC (now Fuel Alt) records and ran also G/CC on consecutive days. In 1987 they set record in G/GT. Quite an accomplishment....  Rules have since been changed that would preclude this sort of class changing.

As El Mirage uses the SCTA/rule book, then Yes.

In 1986 the rules for CC, Alt and GC said certain modifications were "allowed" not that they were mandatory (as they are now) for classification purposes. I haven't looked at when they were changed but can do that if you want.

El Mirage has procedures rules that, I believe, don't allow you to change classes at one meet.  (Probably related to points and data acquisition.)

I've seen racers (mainly bikes) set numerous records at Bonneville.

But each time must be reinspected and go thru Impound, which seems a little burdensome while setting 30 or 40 records in a day or two.  Probably a little more legitimate, tho.

My comments have to do with the actual required modifications to meet class standards, such as engine swap, non stock supercharger, body stretch, belly pan, chopped top etc. In the past, these were "allowed" for the class. More recently, one or more are "required". There is no problem changing classes at Bonneville if you can make a change (adding headlight covers turns a production car into an altered for instance) . Knowing nothing about the bike rules, I suspect changes between classes may be easier to do. The El Mirage section in the rule book refers to "El Mirage Procedures" but I don't see them. A separate document? Otherwise the SCTA rule book prevails.

I joined an EXP / LN7 group of folks on FaceBook, specifically looking for information and/or photos of the Dolan-Jeffries car.

Some guys on the group had heard of the car in its various incarnations, but no one had any details or photos.

If anyone finds that article, it would be greatly appreciated if you would share it.

Steve.

I saw an TOC from Nov. 81 Motor Trend that had an article about a LN7 setting records at Bonneville.  Help?
