« on: January 17, 2016, 11:42:29 PM »
The rule book says SA2010 (2015 rule book) but i'm looking at summit racing to aquire a helmet.  I see SA2015 is here, I can go for that right?  I really would like to have the latest version of the Bell Vader series helmet... makes me look sinister... like my car... WE'LL MATCH IT'LL BE SO CUTE!

The SA2015 will be "good" under the rules for a lot longer than the SA2010, so that's the way I'd go. Each evolution of helmet ups the safety aspect through better materials, i.e. fire retardant properties, stronger construction, HANS integration. I believe the lifespan is ~7 years (the SA2015 should be good until at least 2022).

I think this is a money making racket.
Imagine a brand new helmet in a box that has never been used
but now it fall outside the rules?.
I'm not talking something made in the 90s!!!!!!.

Mike, you of all people should know that resins and epoxy have a service life. Over time they deteriorate, craze, crack, dry and become brittle. That shell doesn't get harder over time, it gets brittle over time.

I would be more concerned with buying a helmet in a year of El Nino after two years of poor salt conditions and a conversation heard a PRI where the idea was floated of cancelling salt activities this year in favor of pumping salt back to the north side of I80 ... and expecting to use a new helmet this year.

I would wait until the last minute on making that investment...which is what I did last year. (I did get to use mine though, just not at the salt)

I work with Composites and have done for 30 years.
I know the degradation etc.
What bothers me is some idiot buying a Polycarbonate bike helmet cheapie and because it's "Approved"
he gets to go racing with it.
